Newcastle United must avoid ‘poor’ Chelsea swap deal for Anthony Gordon – opinion

Share
  • Newcastle United must stay away from possible swap deal
  • Chelsea stepping up their interest in Gordon
  • Blues winger would be a poor recruitment decision

All roads lead to Anthony Gordon saying his goodbyes to St James’ Park later this summer, after joining Newcastle United in 2023. The 25-year-old has been heavily linked to Bayern Munich, but a different deal could be in the pipeline.

TEAMtalk understand that Chelsea are keeping an eye on Gordon, and their interest in him might advance if Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich also pursue a transfer.

Following Liam Rosenior’s sacking, the Blues will have to financially back yet another new boss. Could one of those moves be a swap deal between the English winger and Alejandro Garnacho? The Toon Army will be begging that doesn’t happen.

Newcastle United must avoid Garnacho

The Stamford Bridge outfit will bite your hand off for anyone under the age of 23 who shows some signs of promise, one of them being the Argentine.

He showed glimpses of quality when he was at Manchester United, such as a ridiculous overhead kick against Everton a few years ago, but for all his special ability, it doesn’t outweigh the way he acts.

It was reported by the Daily Mail that Chelsea did a thorough examination of his character before deciding to pursue a move for the 21-year-old, but that doesn’t look like the case.

Questions around his temperament, along with his lack of work rate and his poor attitude, would make him a poor recruitment decision if he were to replace Gordon.

The 25-year-old has faced criticism recently for his form and body language. Signing the Argentinian international would only pour more fuel onto a growing fire.

In 23 Premier League appearances, the Chelsea winger has scored once and delivered four assists. Is this good enough for Newcastle’s starting winger? Probably not.

Newcastle United must sign smart

Last summer has had a massive effect on the fans’ view of the next transfer window, with bad recruitment choices being made by the board, which has played a significant hand in their tough season.

One player that would be a smart buy would be Said El Mala, who the club have previously been linked with.

FC Koln president, Jorn Stobbe, has said they’d “be absolutely daft to let such a brilliant player leave so soon”, on the L’Immo podcast, but money talks in the world of football, and Newcastle might look to make a deal possible if Gordon leaves.

His attitude is correct; someone who is willing to work hard for his team, and he has seen those results flourish this season from a personal point of view.

Gordon could well go to Chelsea this summer, but allowing Garnacho to be his replacement would risk repeating recruitment mistakes that have already damaged confidence on Tyneside.
