- Newcastle United linked with ex-Man Utd star David de Gea
- Communication between parties to gauge interest
- Magpies looking to bolster goalkeeping options this summer
Newcastle United are reportedly interested in bringing ex Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea to the club as part of this summer’s rebuild, according to Alan Nixon.
The Spaniard left the Red Devils in 2023, where he took a year out of the game before signing for Fiorentina on a free transfer. De Gea has been playing in Serie A ever since.
Newcastle are set for a big transfer window this summer and are readying communication with De Gea to gauge his interest in a return to the Premier League.
Newcastle United goalkeeper struggles
The speculation comes amid some rather prominent goalkeeper problems for Newcastle.
Aaron Ramsdale is set to return to Southampton when his loan deal ends in the summer. Ramsdale has failed to really endear himself as an outstanding number one during his period on Tyneside, with some shaky performances and mistakes made across the season.
Nick Pope, who began the season as the Magpies’ number one, fell behind Ramsdale in the pecking order after a catalogue of mistakes in the first half of the season. The Englishman appears well past his best and will likely have to settle for being the backup next season.
This leaves the door open for a new number one at St James’ Park, with a few goalkeepers, like James Trafford and Mile Svilar, linked to the club.
David de Gea is the latest of those, with the Manchester United legend putting in some excellent performances despite Fiorentina’s struggles.
De Gea could be smart business
While Newcastle are looking to transition toward a younger core and younger recruitment, there is still the need for experienced heads in the ranks.
The club is already set to lose the experience of Kieran Trippier this summer and will likely look to bring in at least some experience despite the younger focus.
Given the ambitions to compete at the top, David de Gea’s history in competing with the elite at the top level could be exactly what Newcastle need.
De Gea would undeniably be an upgrade on the current crop of goalkeepers, and Eddie Howe could favour the blend of ability and experience that the Spaniard would bring. He likely wouldn’t be too expensive and could favour a move back to the Premier League if guaranteed a starting spot.
