- Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe in precarious position
- Magpies suffer another Premier League defeat
- Howe hesitates when asked about player commitment following AFC Bournemouth defeat
Newcastle United insiders have reportedly provided an update on the future of under-pressure manager Eddie Howe following the 2-1 defeat to AFC Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.
That loss followed the same result against Sunderland and Crystal Palace in the last two league outings as the Magpies struggle to hold onto points. After the clash, Howe was hesitant when asked about the commitment of his players to the task at hand.
It is not a positive mood around St James’ Park at the moment with hopes of European qualification fast fading. Last week, star man Anthony Gordon was also speculated to have handed in a transfer request for the summer, feeling he had ‘outgrown’ the project on Tyneside.
Newcastle United update on Eddie Howe
The Chronicle has provided an update on the future of Howe. It had been reported in some quarters that the manager had been kept behind for ‘crisis talks’ with CEO David Hopkinson, sporting director Ross Wilson and performance director James Bunce on Saturday evening.
However, the outlet claims to have spoken to insiders at the club, and believe that those conversations took place in the dressing room and not the boardroom. It’s being named a ‘routine debrief’ between Howe and Wilson.
It’s added that Newcastle ‘will not hit the panic button’ on a decision over Howe’s future. The Magpies manager and his coaching staff will still be in charge for the trip to Arsenal on Saturday night. Howe remains committed to his work at St James’ Park.
Eddie Howe asked about players’ commitment
Some fans did question whether that might be the case during the manager’s post match press conference at the weekend. When asked if he believed his players to still be committed to the club, Howe paused for seven seconds to think before answering.
He then said: “I’m hesitating because I’m speaking on behalf of other people and that’s very difficult to do.
“I believe they do and from what I see on the training ground, I don’t see any sense of poor attitude or poor commitment to their work. I see a group of players that are always giving their all.
“Of course we all need to give more, the players need to give more, I need to give more, to turn the results around.”
