Newcastle United need to sign reinforcements in several positions across the pitch this summer. After all, they finished 12th in the Premier League last season. So, the room for improvement is quite clear.
There has been a ton of talk about improving the options up front and in midfield. Even goalkeepers have been a point of focus, with Zion Suzuki being heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park recently.
One area that has been somewhat overlooked though is Newcastle United’s defence. That should not be the case though, especially when you look at the numbers.
Newcastle United conceded 55 goals in the Premier League last season, quite a bit more than their 47 from the previous campaign. And with their defence ageing, the need to make a few additions is quite clear.
Newcastle and Manchester United competing for Wales international
It looks like Newcastle United are looking towards Nottingham Forest as they seek to strengthen their defensive ranks in this summer transfer window.
As it turns out, they are not alone. It appears that Manchester United are right alongside the Magpies in their admiration of the 25-year-old Nottingham Forest standout.
According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United and Newcastle United have both expressed interest in Nottingham Forest’s Neco Williams. Tottenham Hotspur are monitoring him as well.
So, it looks like there would be no lack of suitors for Williams if the 25-year-old Welsh international does end up leaving Nottingham Forest this summer.
Would Neco Williams be a good signing for Newcastle United?
Williams is a very versatile full-back. He is capable of playing both as a left-back and as a right-back. That ability will appeal to many clubs without a doubt.
Williams is also an established international for Wales. So, that kind of experience should help him adjust to a club that has aspirations for silverware.
There have been suggestions that a move to Manchester United would be particularly attractive to Williams. And to be honest, it is not hard to see why he might pick Old Trafford over St James’ Park.
Man Utd’s interest in Williams is interesting though, as they have also been linked heavily with Lewis Hall lately. There is no doubt that the fans would want to see him remain in place for as long as possible. If that means that the Magpies miss out on signing Williams from Nottingham Forest, that would be viewed as a small sacrifice.
