- Newcastle United legend fears the end for Howe
- Alan Shearer angry about players
- Manager and players are divided
Newcastle United lost yet again at St James’ Park at the weekend, this time in a 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth, and the pressure is intensifying even more for manager Eddie Howe.
On The Rest is Football podcast, legendary Magpie forward Alan Shearer believes we may see a different figure in the dugout as the new season rolls around in August, as Howe’s position is on the brink.
He said, “As I sit here, I don’t see Eddie in charge of Newcastle next season, unfortunately.
“I’m not sure the fight is there. I think it’s a very different club now to the one that he would want to go for. He doesn’t look in a good position.”
Shearer blasts players and Howe’s post-match comments
Newcastle found themselves behind on the weekend against the Cherries, before they pulled it back level thanks to William Osula. However, a late goal from Adrien Truffert was the difference between the sides.
While the former forward believes Howe’s time is coming to an end, he is extremely upset with the way the players are dealing with the current situation, as it piles more pressure on their manager.
He added: “Did you watch it yesterday? The players were terrible. As tough as it is for Eddie, I don’t know what’s going to happen to him.
“I look at the players yesterday, and if that’s what they call fighting for their manager, because he’s under huge pressure, whether you like it or not, and if that’s what they’re prepared to give… they were terrible.”
Further questions have been asked about the relationship between the players and their boss, following the English manager’s comments after the game.
He was asked about the fire in the team, and struggled to answer immediately, before saying: “I’m hesitating as I’m speaking on behalf of other people and that’s very difficult to do.”
The fractures are showing in what once was a committed side under Howe, and it seems like a question of when rather than if, Howe will be sacked at this stage.
Should Howe be sacked?
The comments from the 48-year-old after the final whistle paint the picture for everyone to the Toon Army to see, and now, there seems to be a disconnect between everyone at the club.
Their manager has seriously underperformed in a campaign which was expected to build on last year’s success, though it has become a sinking ship.
Parts of the struggle have been out of his hands, but he has had a major influence in their dismal campaign, though the players aren’t faultless either.
Shearer’s comments shed light on a harsh reality which may be a difficult obstacle to overcome, as the players and their boss have failed to embody Newcastle over the course of the season.
