Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has thanked longtime teammate Kieran Trippier after he announced he’s leaving St James’ Park at the end of the season, once his contract expires.
Trippier moved to Tyneside from Atletico Madrid in January 2022, and was a key player in their Carabao Cup victory in 2025. He was the first major signing following the Saudi-led takeover and has been a fan favourite.
Guimaraes took to Instagram and responded to Trippier’s announcement, where he had high praise for the 35-year-old. He said,
“Thanks for everything you have done for this club Tripps! It was a pleasure to play for more than four years alongside you mate. Wishing you all the best. Legend.”
Trippier has made over 150 appearances at St James’ Park and enjoyed many memorable moments. Plenty of them came alongside Guimaraes, who will be without one of his fellow leaders.
Guimaraes and Trippier’s Tyneside Relationship
In the same January, the English fullback moved to St James’ Park, and Guimaraes also made the switch to the North East, joining from Ligue 1 side Lyon.
They were introduced as part of the new project under the ownership of the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, which would move the club on from the dark days under former owner Mike Ashley.
They quickly climbed out of the relegation zone that loomed over Eddie Howe’s side’s hopeful prospects as they finished 11th.
The 35-year-old was named captain ahead of the 2022-23 campaign as they finished in the Champions League positions for the first time in over two decades.
Their bond continued to grow, with the Brazilian taking the captaincy off Trippier for the 2024/25 season.
In March of 2025, they shared their best moment in the Black and White shirt as they would lift the Carabao Cup under the Wembley arch as they beat Liverpool 2-1.
This campaign hasn’t been as enjoyable, as they’ve struggled in the Premier League and been knocked out of each cup competition.
However, the pair have been crucial in bringing this new era to the Magpies, as they look to build upon that after Trippier’s departure.
Trippier Replacements to be Considered
There is no doubt that the former club captain has played a major role in their success in recent years, allowing them to progress.
In the opening seasons, he was a creative force for them, and while Tino Livramento overtook him in the pecking order, he played the role of a leader in the dressing room.
The club have to replace him perfectly if they are to keep their standards, which have slipped this season. There are reportedly already three players on the wishlist.
It’s not just the quality but the impact he brought to his teammates, which led to Newcastle making this climb, which will be talked about for years on Tyneside, and it’s highlighted by Guimaraes’ message on the importance he held in the dressing room.
