Newcastle Need Signings amid Full-back Crisis

  • Trippier leaving & Livramento linked away
  • Two right-backs needed
  • Lewis Hall backup on radar

Newcastle are now in a position where fullback signings are desperately needed this summer. Kieran Trippier was today announced to be leaving the club when his contract runs out in June, and Tino Livramento is linked with a summer move away from Tyneside.

Right back wasn’t a position on the radar at the start of the season. But the links away and injury history of Livramento, alongside losing such a key figure in Trippier, will likely cause incomings.

Newcastle could look to sign two new right-back fullbacks. The left fullback position is also of interest, with no real current backup to Lewis Hall in the squad.

The Magpies were already set for a big summer window, with both departures and arrivals expected as the squad undertakes a revamp.

Trippier Replacements on Radar

Trippier’s departure was always a possibility given the short time remaining on his contract. Newcastle hadn’t publicly made a decision on the veteran’s future but has now confirmed he won’t be sticking around.

This decision could well have been made behind the scenes, though, as replacements for Trippier have already begun circulating in the media.

Chronicle Live suggests Givairo Read, Kyriani Sabbe and Zakaria El Ouahdi could all be worthy Trippier replacements. The three names would be the sort of signings the club is looking to make this summer, with each having a much lower age profile than their predecessor.

Possible Livramento replacements

Tino Livramento has been heavily linked with a move away from Newcastle this summer, with Manchester City the most likely destination at this stage.

The Magpies had reportedly attempted contract negotiations with the England international earlier in the year. But failed in their attempts, with Livramento reportedly keen to assess his options when the transfer window rolls around.

Some possible replacements for Livramento include Norwegian fullback Ryerson, who currently plays for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.

Michael Kayode at Brentford has also been linked, having taken the Premier League by storm, most notably for his exceptional capacity for long throws.

Denzel Dumfries is the other name who has cropped up in recent days, with Inter Milan reportedly open to selling the Dutchman for a fee in the region of £25m.

This could be an intriguing prospect for the club, as Dumfries would replace some of the experience lost by Trippier’s departure.

A deputy for Lewis Hall

Alongside the right-back problems, there is also possibly the need for a backup left-back to be signed this summer.

Whilst the club currently has Alex Murphy, Eddie Howe has been reluctant to use the Irishman this season, leading many to wonder whether he is up to the standard of Premier League football.

Lewis Hall has been largely run into the ground this season, and with the club’s ambition to become a regular in Europe, signing a second option trusted to share the load is likely on the agenda this summer.

Dayann Methalie is a name that has been linked with the club and doesn’t seem to be going away. Methalie had been a target for the club in January, but the fullback did have an injury during that period, and some other factors prevented the Magpies from making a move.

The Toulouse defender has made a name for himself this season, playing 22 Ligue 1 games and playing a big part in Toulouse’s solid campaign to this point.
