Newcastle United are finding a tough time in the Premier League after starting the season under Matthias Jaissle. Despite the hype on his arrival, what has gone wrong at Newcastle United?
Newcastle United are facing questions over their playing style under Matthias Jaissle, with reports suggesting some players are unsure about the manager’s tactics and instructions.
According to Craig Hope in a report with The Daily Mail, there is uncertainty within the squad over the team’s approach, with players in deeper positions often looking to move the ball forward quickly rather than build attacks through midfield.
The report suggests that Newcastle’s senior players remain supportive of Jaissle and accept responsibility for improving performances, despite the growing concerns.
Newcastle players unsure about Jaissle’s system
The report reveals that some players are struggling to understand the team’s playing style.
“I have been told some players are unsure as to the playing style and strategy, and that has led to those in deep positions getting the ball forward as quickly as possible, invariably with a long pass.”
As per the report, a senior player believes a return to a 4-3-3 formation could be the logical solution. Jaissle had already considered the change before Newcastle’s trip to Crystal Palace last month and with the results not coming, he may choose that option soon.
Matthias Jaissle under pressure over tactics after Everton defeat
Jaissle highlighted a lack of following by the team for his tactics in the recent Everton loss. He was clear that the players weren’t playing his brand of football, calling out too many long balls played by the team.
“Unfortunately we couldn’t deliver actually over the whole 90 minutes it was not our game and our style of playing. That is something we are very frustrated and disappointed about. If you cannot deliver when it counts then you don’t deserve to win. We were not brave enough in possession, too many long balls.”
The recent defeat against Everton leaves Newcastle United 13th in the Premier League table and extends their run to four defeats in their last five matches across all competitions.
No Premier League side has lost more home games in 2026 than Newcastle who have lost seven. They have now also lost 16 of their past 18 league games when conceding first.
‘Nobody knows what they are doing’
Former Newcastle and Ireland defender Anderson has also questioned the team’s current approach.
“There is not a structure to what they are trying to do. You get the impression nobody knows what anyone is doing.
“I just don’t get what they’re trying to do, what the game plan is? It’s not pretty, it’s not good to watch, it doesn’t get you off your seat or excited.”
Newcastle play Fulham next on Saturday, which could be a crucial game for Jaissle as pressure continues to mount on the German over his methods and results.
