Newcastle United suffer another defeat as Thierno Barry fires Everton to victory

Everton 3-1 Newcastle United

Newcastle United suffered another disappointing defeat as Thierno Barry scored for the second time in five days to give Everton a 1-0 win at St James’ Park in the Premier League.

The visitors took the lead shortly after half-time when Tyrique George was given too much space to run into the Newcastle box.

His low effort beat goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek before Barry tapped home the rebound from close range in the 49th minute.

It was Barry’s eighth goal in 12 appearances across all competitions this season, after scoring in Everton’s 3-1 Carabao Cup victory as well over Newcastle United on Thursday.

Barry punishes Newcastle defensive mistakes

Newcastle were once again caught out by poor defending, allowing another mistake to allow George run into the box without being tracked. Hornicek could have done better with the initial effort, but nobody was close enough to stop Barry from converting the rebound.

Everton also had a late penalty appeal after Fabian Schar appeared to catch Barry inside the box while attempting to clear the ball. However, referee John Brooks’ decided not to award a penalty which was was upheld by a VAR aswell.

Newcastle struggled to find an equaliser despite creating a few opportunities in the second half.

Their best chance arrived in the 66th minute when Anthony Elanga met Harvey Barnes’ cross with a powerful effort.

Jordan Pickford got a hand to the shot, which then struck the post before briefly travelling along the goal line.

The England goalkeeper was called into action again in the 90th minute, keeping out substitute Yoane Wissa’s low effort with his feet.

Newcastle’s home form becomes a concern

The defeat leaves Newcastle 13th in the Premier League table and extends their difficult run to four defeats in their last five matches across all competitions.

Their home form is becoming an increasing concern, with the Magpies winning just one of their five Premier League matches at St James’ Park this season. They are also yet to keep a clean sheet on home soil in the league.

Jaissle’s side have now lost twice against Everton in five days, with their defensive problems once again proving costly. Newcastle created chances to get something from the game but failed to take them, while another individual mistake at the back ultimately decided the result.
