Newcastle vs Aston Villa: Newcastle 0-1 Aston Villa: Manzambi header sinks stuttering Magpies

Newcastle vs Aston Villa

MATCH REPORT Newcastle vs Aston Villa. Newcastle United suffered another defeat in the Premier League on Saturday at St James’ Park. Johan Manzambi got himself on the scoresheet in the first half, helping Aston Villa secure a narrow win.

Lively Start, Little Reward

In the Newcastle vs Aston Villa match this evening, Newcastle started brightly and threatened to score within the first few minutes of the game before earning an early corner. Villa’s defence held firm.

Gradually, the visitors took control. Nicolas Jackson hit a tame shot at Lukas Hornicek. Manzambi saw an effort blocked. Newcastle’s forward play lacked a cutting edge.

Manzambi Strikes

The breakthrough came in the 36th minute, when Gomes played a ball into the box and Manzambi was unmarked in the centre, heading into the net.

The Newcastle marking was poor, and Villa was close to doubling the lead right after. Emi Buendía struck the post in the 39th minute, and the Magpies went into the break one goal down.

A Scrappy, Bad-Tempered Contest

It was the refereeing decisions that governed the game, as both Joelinton and Sven Botman were yellow carded in the 18th minute. Alysson got booked for simulation, and Nico González, along with Yoane Wissa, was carded during the second half.

Newcastle had six bookings compared to Villa’s two by the final whistle, as Matthias Jaissle’s men never settled.

No Second-Half Response

Botman’s free kick forced a save from Zion Suzuki early in the second half Wissa headed over and Botman and Wissa both missed

Jaissle subbed just before the hour when William Osula and Bazoumana Touré came on for Matías Fernández-Pardo and Joe Willock. Despite the pressure applied by Newcastle, they were unable to create much in the way of clear chances

The stats reflected Newcastle’s struggles in front of goal. They managed 11 shots to Villa’s 15, but only one hit the target. Villa managed three. Hornicek made a crucial save from Ross Barkley’s low shot in the 74th minute to keep the deficit to one goal.

What It Means

Newcastle are 11th in the league on eight points after losing their last two league games. They lost 4-1 at Coventry on Monday. Villa are up to 12th, also on eight points.

Next up for Newcastle is a trip to Crystal Palace next Sunday. They badly need a response.
