Alan Shearer expects Manchester United’s difficult week to get worse, tipping Leeds United to beat them at a raucous Elland Road in this weekend’s Premier League fixtures.
The Newcastle United legend, speaking to Metro as a Betfair ambassador, believes Michael Carrick’s side are short on belief and will struggle against a Leeds team brimming with confidence after their display against Arsenal last weekend.
Leeds to feed off United’s pressure
Shearer pointed out that Leeds deservedly led Arsenal and only lost control once the visitors made changes. He expects that confidence to carry over.
“I’ve got no faith or confidence in Man United,” he said, but believes the players are playing for Carrick. He felt their reaction in Madrid on Tuesday, and recent comments from Lisandro Martinez suggest the players like their manager. Unfortunately for Carrick, Shearer thinks that will not be enough.
Elsewhere, Chelsea travel to Everton following a 5-0 win against Bournemouth last time out. Shearer is not impressed with their defence. Nonetheless, he rates a front three of Palmer, Rogers and Joao Pedro, and with the Toffees still unbeaten, he expects a draw.
Liverpool visit Brentford with a heavy European schedule ahead, and Shearer believes Keith Andrews’ side could benefit. He has great admiration for the manner in which Brentford came from 2-1 down at Villa Park to snare a point and is expecting them to bring the pressure on.
Manchester City, who beat Liverpool at Anfield last weekend, welcome Ipswich Town to the Etihad. Shearer was impressed by the manner of their fight but believed the result was influenced heavily by a sending off. He does not see Ipswich getting anything from the game. Arsenal, meanwhile, have a game on the Sunday as they visit Nottingham Forest.
Newcastle is given a narrow edge
Shearer also believes his old club will bounce back after their heavy defeat on Monday. They are playing in the Champions League again next week. The former striker feels the pressure on Newcastle to put things right is so great that another poor showing would be unacceptable.
He expects Villa to continue their inconsistent form. But he warned that Nicolas Jackson, who scored twice in midweek, is clearly enjoying life at Villa Park.
In other games, he is confident that Tottenham must defeat Coventry or face another relegation scrap. He was impressed by their attitude last weekend. He thinks a win would be a huge relief for Roberto De Zerbi. Brighton, he believes, are flying and will see off Crystal Palace. Bournemouth are expected to edge out Sunderland, whom he feels are not the same without Brian Brobbey.
