Newcastle news: McTominay and Morton links, PIF anniversary and Coventry preparations

Newcastle United’s midfield plans have featured prominently in Thursday’s news, with Scott McTominay and Tyler Morton both linked with moves to St James’ Park.

There has also been an opportunity to assess the club’s transformation five years after the Saudi-backed takeover, while Matthias Jaissle prepares his players for Monday’s Premier League trip to Coventry City.

Here is our 7pm round-up of the latest Newcastle United news for Thursday, 8 October.

McTominay and Morton feature in transfer speculation

Newcastle have been linked with Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay as discussion continues over their plans to strengthen the squad.

The former Manchester United player has established himself in Italy, and his experience would make him an interesting option for a Newcastle midfield reshaped by the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

Our report on Newcastle’s interest in McTominay examines the latest claims and the potential obstacles to a deal. There is no indication at this stage that a formal offer has been made.

There has also been further discussion of Lyon midfielder Tyler Morton, who is reportedly attracting attention from several Premier League clubs.

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness has suggested that Newcastle could be well placed to sign the 23-year-old, although Nottingham Forest have also been linked with the former Liverpool player.

As detailed in our coverage of Newcastle’s position in the Morton transfer race, the latest comments remain predictions about a possible future move rather than evidence of negotiations.

Both names illustrate the options being discussed as Newcastle consider how best to rebuild their midfield, although neither represents a confirmed transfer target.

Five years since the PIF takeover

Thursday’s coverage has also included a look back at Newcastle’s transformation since the Public Investment Fund-led consortium completed its takeover in October 2021.

The £305m deal ended Mike Ashley’s 14-year ownership and brought significant changes to the club’s ambitions, spending and management structure.

Our assessment of Newcastle’s transformation five years after the PIF takeover compares the relatively lean operation inherited from Ashley with the expanded executive structure now overseen by chief executive David Hopkinson and sporting director Ross Wilson.

Newcastle have since returned to the Champions League and ended their long wait for a major domestic trophy, although the challenge of establishing themselves consistently among the Premier League’s leading clubs remains.

The anniversary also brings renewed attention to Saudi Arabia’s involvement in English football and the human rights concerns that have accompanied the ownership from the outset.

Coventry trip brings attention back to the pitch

Newcastle’s next assignment is Monday’s Premier League visit to Coventry City, with Jaissle hoping to build on his side’s victory over Hull City before the international break.

Our Coventry v Newcastle kick-off and television guide provides the essential details, including the 8pm kick-off and live coverage on Sky Sports.

The extended break has given Newcastle time to work with those players not involved in international football and assess the fitness of those returning from national-team duty.

Jaissle will also be looking for greater consistency from his side after an opening month disrupted by injuries and changes to the squad.

Monday’s visit to Coventry offers Newcastle an opportunity to build on their encouraging result against Hull and establish some momentum before the autumn fixture programme gathers pace.
