Newcastle United have been tipped to emerge as favourites to sign Lyon midfielder Tyler Morton next summer as the club continues to reshape its midfield following the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.
The 23-year-old former Liverpool player is reportedly attracting regular attention from Newcastle’s scouts, although Nottingham Forest are also being linked with a move to bring him back to the Premier League.
Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness believes Forest could be better placed to pursue Morton in January, but expects Newcastle to become the stronger contenders if the midfielder remains available next summer.
Playing time could influence Morton’s decision
Speaking to Football Insider, Wyness suggested that the prospect of regular first-team football would be central to Morton’s decision.
He believes Newcastle’s changing midfield could offer the player a clearer route into the side by the end of the season, although his assessment is a prediction rather than confirmation of any agreement.
Morton joined Lyon from Liverpool in 2025, having previously spent time on loan at Blackburn Rovers and Hull City. He made 43 appearances for the French club last season, gaining experience in European competition.
Former Manchester United scout Mick Brown has separately claimed that Newcastle are watching Morton regularly in France, suggesting that the club have already undertaken detailed assessments of his performances.
There is no confirmation of a formal offer or negotiations with Lyon, and Forest’s reported interest means Newcastle would not necessarily have a clear path to a deal.
Nevertheless, Morton’s development in France and Newcastle’s changing midfield options explain why his name is being linked with a potential summer move to St James’ Park.
