It is very clear that Newcastle United need to strengthen in midfield this summer. Sandro Tonali has left to join Tottenham Hotspur in a £100 million transfer. Bruno Guimaraes has agreed personal terms with Arsenal as well.
On the other hand, the Magpies could be looking to take advantage of a Manchester United transfer collapse. The deal had looked done and dusted. But there has been a twist in the tale in the final steps.
Of course, Newcastle United have found themselves with the shoe on the other foot in somewhat similar situations in the past. But this time around, they could be the ones benefiting from the events.
According to SportMediaSet, Manchester United have backed out of a deal for Ederson and informed Atalanta that the medical tests were unsatisfactory, without specifying the problem. Newcastle United are ready to make an offer to bring him to the Premier League.
Why has Ederson’s move to Manchester United collapsed?
For weeks now, it had seemed like it was only a matter of time before Ederson ended up at Manchester United. Everything had seemed over the line.
Yet, somehow, the transfer has collapsed. According to several outlets, it looks like the medical has proven to be the problem. But then, Atalanta appear to believe that the player is completely fit.
It is worth pointing out that Ederson did take part in Brazil’s World Cup campaign. So, that raises some eyebrows about how he could be unfit enough to derail a transfer.
Also, Manchester United have recently agreed a €50 million transfer deal to sign Andrey Santos from Chelsea, another addition in the middle of the park.
Would Ederson be a good signing for Newcastle United?
Well, on paper, if Newcastle United do end up signing Ederson, it has the potential to be an excellent move. He is a full Brazil international and a standout for Atalanta.
At the end of the day, there is a reason that Manchester United wanted to sign him in the first place. Just look at some of the numbers he was putting up in Serie A last season as a defensive midfielder.
He was good with his distribution, put solid numbers creatively, was good with the ball at his feet and excellent in the defensive phase of the game. What more could you ask of a number 6? Ederson seems very complete in his role.
Now, it remains to be seen if Newcastle United do indeed end up making a serious move to sign him or not. But on the surface of it, this feels like a situation they should be keeping their eye on.
