So far this summer, the story of Newcastle United has revolved around exits. They have seen Anthony Gordon join Barcelona and Sandro Tonali head to Tottenham Hotspur. Those are two of their best already gone. But that might not be the end of it.
It also looks like Bruno Guimaraes is eyeing the exit door as well. Arsenal are interested, and the Brazilian midfielder has already agreed personal terms. From here, his exit feels much more likely than staying on.
On the other hand, Newcastle United have signed Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur and Ewen Jaouen so far. Those are highly rated talents. But all of them are young and inexperienced. You cannot build a winning project by solely relying on wonderkids. Just ask Chelsea how that works out.
So, Newcastle United will need to add some experience and proven quality to their rank. And a 28-year-old AC Milan centre-back seems to be on their radar.
Newcastle United named favourites to sign AC Milan player
Newcastle United have to recognise that they have an ageing backline at the moment, with a number of their defenders past 30 years of age. So, sooner or later, they will need to start getting ready for the transition in defence.
According to Football Insider, AC Milan are open to letting Fikayo Tomori join Newcastle United this summer. The Magpies are said to be in ‘pole position’ to agree a deal for the centre-back.
Tomori is believed to have less than a year left on his contract at AC Milan. So, the Italian side are open to parting ways with him now rather than risk losing him for free next summer.
Tomori will know English football well, having come up through the Chelsea youth ranks and broken through in the senior game at Stamford Bridge. It was in 2021 that he left for AC Milan and has been a regular contributor for them since then.
Eddie Howe is believed to have had him on his radar for quite some time as well. So, it is not hard to see why the Magpies might be ready to make their move now.
Why would Tomori be a good signing for Newcastle United
Tomori is someone who has done a pretty solid job at AC Milan over the past five years. But since he is 28 years of age now, perhaps there is no longer the hype around his name that was there in the past.
Tomori would be a solid addition to many clubs though. You do not start for AC Milan for five seasons unless you are a quality centre-back.
He has solid distribution and is very good in the defensive phase of the game as well. A return to the Premier League makes perfect sense at this point in his career as well.
Also, thanks to his contract situation, there is a possibility that Newcastle United could land the signature of Tomori for a bargain transfer fee.
