Newcastle United have already lost a lot of quality in this summer transfer window. Anthony Gordon has moved to FC Barcelona. Sandro Tonali has completed a £100 million move to Tottenham Hotspur.
That is not ideal, especially after a season in which they finished 12th in the Premier League. But unfortunately, this might not be the end. It appears that another important Newcastle United player could be on his way out of St James’ Park. At least that is what he wants.
Over the past 12 months, Bruno Guimaraes has seen some of his best teammates leave. Of course, this summer, Tonali and Gordon depart. Less than a year ago, it was Alexander Isak moving to Liverpool.
Now, it appears that the Brazilian is considering joining them out the exit door. According to Sky Sports, Guimaraes has told Newcastle United he wants to leave and join Arsenal.
Why Bruno Guimaraes might be keen on joining Arsenal
It is not hard to understand why Guimaraes might be keen on a move to Arsenal. Firstly, Mikel Arteta is believed to be a big fan of the player.
Also, at Arsenal, he would get the chance to compete for trophies on a consistent basis. To be very honest, that is not the case at Newcastle United.
And considering the transfer strategy the Magpies have adopted this summer, of trying to sign youngsters, they might not be in title contention anytime soon though.
Guimaraes is 28 years of age. So, he might not want to wait for another rebuild to hopefully fall into place. Coming off an excellent World Cup campaign, this might be his best opportunity to get a big move. So, it is easy to see why he is keen on joining Arsenal.
What do Newcastle United do now?
Well, in modern football, when a player wants to leave, it happens more often than not. The best-case scenario for the club would be to find a way to convince Guimaraes to stay.
It is unlikely that will work out though. So, the second-best scenario would be managing to bring in as big of a transfer fee as possible.
Perhaps there are other clubs out there that could do with someone like Guimaraes. Chelsea might be one, having sanctioned Andrey Santos’ £50 million move to Manchester United.
If there are more clubs involved, it will only drive up the transfer fee. Now, it remains to be seen how things will play out over the coming weeks and months.
