Newcastle United want to sign England international to replace Sandro Tonali

It is unsurprising that Newcastle United are looking to strengthen their midfield in this summer transfer window. They have seen Sandro Tonali leave in a £100 million transfer move to join Tottenham Hotspur.

It would be a mistake to understate the importance that Tonali had in this team. There is a reason Newcastle United were ready to pay £100 million to sign him.

Replacing Tonali will not be an easy task for the Magpies. That is for sure. They will need to bring in someone with proven quality and then hope that he fits into Eddie Howe’s system.

The club are already on the verge of signing Sean Steur from Ajax. But the 18-year-old, with 25 senior caps, might not be ready for a role of that magnitude.

They do appear to have an England international midfielder on their radar. Now, it remains to be seen if a move proves to be feasible or not.

Newcastle United eyeing England international midfielder to replace Sandro Tonali

According to Football Insider, Newcastle United have set their sights on a deal to sign Everton’s James Garner with Tonali heading to Tottenham Hotspur.

Newcastle United are believed to be keeping an eye on a number of midfielders to potentially replace Tonali this summer. And Garner is believed to be high on their list of targets.

Garner enjoyed a solid campaign with Everton. Playing largely in a number 6 role, he scored three goals and provided seven assists in 41 games across all competitions.

Interestingly, he has the ability to play in both full-back positions as well. Although that is not what the Magpies want him for, that kind of versatility will surely add to the appeal.

Can Newcastle sign James Garner?

Garner is 25 years of age. He has not even entered his prime yet. So, this would be the perfect time to sign him. But it won’t be easy for Newcastle United.

Let’s not forget that Garner has a contract that runs until the summer of 2030. So, Everton will not be under any pressure to part ways with him in the near future.

Even if they do open up to the prospect of it, they would surely be looking for a premium transfer fee in order to sanction any exit in this summer window.

Of course, Garner is not the only player Newcastle United have been linked with in recent times. They will surely have other targets on their radar as well.
