Newcastle United might have a tough time keeping hold of their top players this summer. A lot of the positivity around the project has already worn off and fans have been left questioning its long-term viability after what they have seen unfold lately.
Anthony Gordon has left for FC Barcelona. Sandro Tonali is set to join Tottenham Hotspur. There are constant rumours around Bruno Guimaraes as well, as he is having a standout World Cup campaign and is on the radar of Arsenal.
Those are not the only players who could be heading for the exit door though. Some more key Newcastle United players are potential transfer targets of top clubs as well.
Manchester United interest in Newcastle player confirmed
For example, Manchester United have been linked with Lewis Hall for quite some time. Some contrary reports have suggested that is not on the mark.
But while speaking on the United Stand, Ben Jacobs sounded confident that Man Utd indeed had a level of interest in Hall and if the player wanted a move, the Old Trafford outfit would be there.
Hall is considered one of the best left-backs in the Premier League right now. And remarkably, he is still just 21 years of age. If Man Utd are able to sign him, they would be sorting out their left-back position for at least the next decade, if not longer.
So, it is not hard to see why there would be interest there. On paper, it makes all the sense in the world. But having already said goodbye to Tonali and Gordon this summer, Newcastle United should do their best to ensure no other key players leave this summer.
Newcastle United must find a way to convince Lewis Hall to stay
Hall is an elite talent. He has the potential to develop into a ‘world-class’ player. On his day, he performs at that level already. So, the Magpies simply cannot sanction his exit at this point in time.
Newcastle United’s financial situation means that some exits were always likely this summer. The fans will be hoping that we are past that phase already.
The Magpies have already brought in significant fees to St James’ Park in this window. They are believed to have pocketed a fee north of £70 million for Gordon’s move to Barcelona. On the other hand, the Tonali transfer package is said to be in the region of £100 million including add-ons.
So, that should be enough to help provide some relief to the financial situation and ensure that Newcastle United are under no pressure to part ways with players to balance the books and stay within the rules.
And even if they are not, there are players like Nick Pope, Joe Willock and a few others who are still expected to depart this summer.
The last thing the Magpies should consider is parting ways with a talent like Hall. Of course, if the player starts trying to push through an exit, that would complicate the situation.
