Things have been tough for Newcastle United lately. And they might be about to get tougher. The Magpies finished 12th in the Premier League last season, missing out on all European football in the process. Ideally, this would be a time to think about improving the squad.
On the contrary, it looks like the club’s best players might be looking towards the exit door. Sandro Tonali already has a foot out. It would not be a surprise to see Bruno Guimaraes leave either.
Of course, Anthony Gordon has already left. And there has been speculation about the future of Lewis Hall as well. So, the last thing the club needed was to be handed a fine by UEFA. Yet, that is exactly what has happened.
Newcastle United have been fined €6 million for breaching UEFA’s financial sustainability rules and SCR for 2025. A further €7 million fine is suspended in case of further breaches.
Newcastle United’s fine from UEFA confirmed
Of course, these numbers might not look significant on paper, as far as modern football economics go. But it does underline the need to work within some financial constraints moving forward.
So, that goes to show why the club have to be careful with their transfer activity this summer. Even though players like Tonali and Guimaraes might leave, the Magpies might not be in a position to go out and recruit those of similar quality to replace them.
There seems to be one silver lining in all of this though. According to Luke Edwards, the club have to trade this summer to recruit but sources are adamant that they are no longer under any pressure to transfer anyone after Gordon departed for £75 million to join Barcelona.
Now, it remains to be seen how Newcastle United navigate from here. The Magpies do seem to be in a good enough position to make some decent additions, if some of their current players leave.
What does this mean for Newcastle United this summer?
Names like Felix Nmecha might be out of their reach with Borussia Dortmund expected to demand a transfer fee in the region of €100 million to sanction an exit. But players like Lamine Camara, Anis Hadj Moussa and Johan Manzambi could be realistic targets.
The Magpies will need to get creative when it comes to reshaping the squad this summer. And Eddie Howe has a lot to prove after the 25/26 season they had.
To be honest, a lot of fans are already starting to question where the entire project is headed. Winning the League Cup and qualifying for the Champions League a few times was great for the club.
Yet, nobody can deny that the expectations have not been met. Perhaps some of them were not realistic to begin with. But simply put, Newcastle United have not been able to establish themselves as one of the top clubs in the country immediately, something the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City were able to do in the past, when they got financial power out of nowhere.
