Sky Sport confirms Newcastle United are advancing to sign World Cup winger

Newcastle United will be looking to strengthen their squad this summer after a 12th-placed Premier League finish. Of course, that is easier said than done, as some of their best current players are being heavily linked with moves away from St James’ Park.

One would imagine that the Magpies are using the World Cup to scout for potential talents. And it looks like an Algerian winger has piqued their interest.

Newcastle United have seen one winger leave this summer in the form of Anthony Gordon, who will play for FC Barcelona from next season. On the opposite flank, they have their fair share of worries as well.

Anthony Elanga was not the success story everybody had hoped for. Jacob Murphy’s output was not anything to write home about either. The club could do with someone more prolific there. And it looks like that is exactly what they are hoping for.

Newcastle United want World Cup winger

According to a report from Sky Sport, two clubs are currently the most advanced in the transfer saga to sign Anis Hadj Moussa. They are Newcastle United and Aston Villa.

The report goes on to state that discussions with both English clubs are already well underway and could accelerate rapidly in the coming weeks. Newcastle United and Aston Villa are monitoring the situation very closely.

There is interest from Saudi clubs as well. But the winger’s priority is to move to the Premier League. This decision has now been confirmed, with Moussa preferring English top flight teams over Saudi clubs.

That gives a club like Newcastle United a clear advantage in the race to sign the Algerian winger, currently away at the World Cup. And they seem to be the early frontrunners in this race.

How much it would take to sign Moussa from Feyenoord

At club level, Moussa is on the books of Feyenoord of the Eredivisie. And it is his form for the Dutch club that must have caught the attention of Newcastle and Aston Villa.

Moussa scored 14 goals and provided 7 assists across all competitions for Feyenoord last season. If that translates to the Premier League, the Magpies could do with that sort of output from the flanks, that is for sure.

The transfer fee it would take to sign Moussa seems reasonable by modern standards as well. Feyenoord will be demanding €35 million. One would hope that there is some room for negotiation.

Just for comparison’s sake, Elanga did not score a single goal in the Premier League last season. Murphy did a bit better, finding the back of the net three times.
