- Fabrizio Romano shares fresh Sandro Tonali update
- Tottenham Hotspur target Newcastle United star
- Arsenal and Manchester City also in race
Newcastle United are braced for transfer interest in midfielder Sandro Tonali from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur after an update from Fabrizio Romano overnight.
The Italy international is one of the Magpies first team stars linked with a move away this summer as the North East outfit looks to fund incomings at St James’ Park.
Tonali’s agent had been sowing seeds over a potential exit over the course of the 2025/26 campaign, but Newcastle are yet to receive a formal offer for the 26-year-old.
Late on Monday evening, Romano took to social media to report of a fresh development over Tonali’s future with Spurs entering the race to sign the player.
Tottenham Hotspur enter race for Sandro Tonali
It came as somewhat of a surprise. Arsenal and Manchester United were believed to be frontrunners to snap up the player and could both offer Tonali the chance to play Champions League football next term.
Having finished 17th in the Premier League and narrowly escaped relegation, Roberto De Zerbi’s side cannot do that. If Tonali’s goal is to be back playing European football, moving to that half of North London won’t help with that.
Romano wrote: “EXCLUSIVE: Tottenham have entered the race to sign Sandro Tonali!
“De Zerbi wants Tonali as new star for the midfield, ideal to step up #THFC level. Spurs ready to face Man City and Arsenal in the race for Tonali for new ambitious project to prove their intentions.”

Fabrizio Romano shares fresh Newcastle United transfer update
This morning, Romano shared a fresh update over Tonali’s future and doubled down on reports that Tottenham were weighing up a swoop. In a fresh development, the transfer guru claimed that Spurs had made the player a ‘priority target’.
What’s more, Tonali is said to be ‘open to joining’ and ‘keen’ on a move to work with De Zerbi at Spurs. Romano wrote: “More on Sandro Tonali and Spurs exclusive story. #THFC believe Tonali’s open to joining and keen on the move, while talks with Newcastle will follow on price/package.
“Tottenham want to go ahead strong and get it done as it’s a priority target wanted by De Zerbi.”
While Newcastle are under pressure to cash in on another first team star following the sale of Anthony Gordon for £69 million, they will hold power in imminent negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur.
Tonali has another three years left on his contract, with the Magpies holding the option of an extra 12 months. That would keep the Italian at St James’ Park until 2030.
The playmaker’s latest deal was offered to him during his time suspended due to betting infringements, in an act of goodwill from Newcastle, who stood by the player despite his errors.
Even if, as Romano suggests, Tonali is keen to make the switch to Tottenham, Newcastle will certainly not feel they owe the player any more favours in being pressured to green light a quickfire sale.
