‘Led To Believe’: Newcastle United learn Man Utd stance on £100m Sandro Tonali move
  • Newcastle United brace for Sandro Tonali transfer interest
  • Tottenham Hotspur join the race
  • Magpies know where Manchester United stand on £100m swoop

Newcastle United are whittling down their list of potential suitors for midfielder Sandro Tonali with one in and one out of the race on Tuesday.

The Magpies are under no pressure to sell the Italy international, who has another three years left on his deal at St James’ Park, plus the option of another 12 months.

Tonali is not at the World Cup this summer after Italy failed to qualify, making him the potential target of a quickfire transfer move from rivals wanting to get business done before the culmination of the tournament.

Newcastle are unlikely to accept a bid much less than £100 million for a player who cost £55 million from AC Milan in 2023, and has gone on to make 110 appearances for the Magpies.

Newcastle United handed Fabrizio Romano update

Overnight, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano shared an exclusive that Tottenham Hotspur had entered the race for Tonali with new manager Roberto De Zerbi wanting the playmaker as a ‘priority signing’.

In an update this morning, Romano added that Tonali is supposedly keen on a move to North London, despite Spurs not being able to offer him the Champions League football that he supposedly craves.

Arsenal and Manchester City, who are both named as potential suitors, would be able to do that. In February, Tonali’s agent Giuseppe Riso told Tuttosport: “Newcastle are having a hard time letting go of Sandro, and he wants to lead the club to the Champions League.

“These transfer discussions will take place later. We’ll see how the season ends and then we’ll decide what to do.”

Manchester United out of Sandro Tonali transfer race

One club who Newcastle United are not expecting an offer from, despite early reports of interest, are Premier League rivals Manchester United.

That’s according to The Telegraph reporter Luke Edwards, who has had his say on the transfer saga following the Romano posts.

Edwards took to social media platform X and wrote: “Newcastle have not had any contact with any club regarding Sandro Tonali so far this summer.

“Newcastle are expecting interest to be shown in the Italy international but if someone wants to sign him they will have to let them know. That has not happened yet and it will be expensive, both in terms of fee and wages.

“They have been led to believe Manchester United WILL NOT bid for Tonali.”

The Red Devils are in the market for a midfielder to bolster the ranks under Michael Carrick at Old Trafford this summer. Nottingham Forest man Elliot Anderson had been a target but the BBC believe that the club has been priced out of that deal.

West Ham star Matheus Fernandes, Brighton man Carlos Baleba and AFC Bournemouth talent Alex Scott are all touted as alternative options.

In other news, Jose Mourinho could do Newcastle United a massive £70m favour this summer.
