- Newcastle United interested in signing Abde Ezzalzouli
- Winger seen as Anthony Gordon’s replacement
- Manuel Pellegrini’s comments prove why he’s tailor-made for the role
Anthony Gordon’s departure to Barcelona has left a massive void for Newcastle United to fill in attack as the Englishman’s numbers during his stint with the club were truly remarkable.
In recent weeks, Abde Ezzalzouli has emerged as a target for the Magpies after his exploits with Real Betis in La Liga.
Coached by Manuel Pellegrini, the Moroccan is coming off his best season as a professional footballer and is set to play a starring role for his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Talks of a transfer are expected to continue on the back burner, but Pellegrini has already revealed why he’s tailor-made to fill Gordon’s shoes at St James’ Park.
Abde Ezzalzouli is perfect for Newcastle United
With 23 goal contributions across all competitions for Betis, the 23-year-old has finally made his presence felt on the grandest stage after being hailed as a rough diamond for a few years now.
Ezzalzouli was on the books of Barcelona earlier in his career and moved to Betis to get regular game time under his belt.
And under Pellegrini’s tutelage, he has taken his game to another level. Speaking about Ezzazouli last month, the former Manchester City boss’ comments prove why the 23-year-old would be perfect for Newcastle United.
“When you have a decisive player like him, everything becomes easier; 23 contributions this season demonstrate his quality,” Pellegrini said last month to Elbotala.
“I am very happy to have him with us, and I hope he stays for as long as possible.”
Who else can replace Anthony Gordon?
Ezzalzouli has a £51m release clause in his contract. While Newcastle United’s interest is well-documented and he has the numbers to back up his asking price, it remains to be seen if they actually make an official offer for him.
Zadok Yohanna has been linked with a move to the Magpies, but the young Nigerian is also wanted by Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton, among others.
Osasuna front man Victor Munoz also has keen admirers at Newcastle United, with the attacker, much like Ezzalzouli, coming on the back of a sensational season with the La Liga side.
Newcastle will sign multiple attackers this summer and it remains to be seen who they bring to the club.
And judging by how things have gone so far, Ezzalzouli’s name has been mentioned more often than others, so don’t be surprised if he’s the one Eddie Howe turn to to replace Gordon.
