- Rory Finneran speaks after Ireland debut
- Finneran ready for first-team opportunities
- Irish international may need to leave to secure senior football
Newcastle United have made some major progress on the academy front in recent years, with some of England’s top talent now housed on Tyneside.
Perhaps nothing was a better indicator of that than 18-year-old Rory Finneran’s senior Ireland call-up, which saw him make his international debut before playing a game for Newcastle.
Despite the achievement, Finneran is clearly not done there. He spoke to the club in the wake of his Ireland appearance about eyeing up first-team opportunities under Eddie Howe in the near future.
What did Finneran say about his Newcastle United future?
Finneran was asked about his next steps and where he wants his development to take him heading into next season.
He said, “The most important thing is making sure I continue to develop and then, eventually, playing first-team football, whether that is with Newcastle or going out on loan. Hopefully, that’s the next step for me.”
Whilst not yet being a part of Eddie Howe‘s plans, fans have been clamouring for Finneran’s involvement toward the back end of the season.
The 18-year-old signed for Newcastle back in the 2024/25 season and has made a big impact during his time in the academy.
This season, Finneran has played the majority for the U21s and has made 17 appearances whilst training with the first team throughout.
Speaking about the experiences he has had this season, Finneran said, “This season has been a great experience. I’ve played a lot of games in different competitions, and that was one of the main things I wanted to achieve.
“Personally, I think I’ve improved a lot during the season, doing what I set out to do with the under-21s.
“There’s a lot of great players in the first-team to look up to. Whenever you’re training with them, you see the top level they’re at, and it shows you what you’ve got to do, but also, subconsciously, learning as much as you can when you’re playing with or against them.
“Being in and around that has been a massive help for my career because they’re top players.”
Finneran’s comments suggest he has the mentality needed to make it in the professional game. His development thus far and clear determination to succeed look set to continue toward him becoming an established pro in the coming years.
What’s next for Finneran?
Finneran’s involvement in first-team training this season suggests the club see a big future ahead of him.
The Irishman will also be helped by Newcastle’s new focus on creating more obvious pathways for youth academy products and looking to give them senior opportunities where possible.
Finneran is a rather unique profile in modern football. He is an out-and-out number six who enjoys the defensive side of the game and can dictate the tempo of play.
All of this positions him well to break through in the near future. But, as he mentioned in his interview, a loan move could be his best next step.
Newcastle are entering a summer of rebuilding, which will likely see some sort of squad overhaul, and the midfield is expected to see some new blood.
This places Finneran as unlikely to be trusted with first-team starts next season.
Due to his need to get experience sooner rather than later, a domestic loan move seems the most likely and best option for his development.
