- Newcastle United beat West Ham
- Kieran Trippier interview infuriates fans
- Departing right-back interviewed mid-match
Premier League fans couldn’t believe what they were watching when Kieran Trippier took an interview during Newcastle United’s 3-1 win over West Ham United. The Magpies star spoke to Sky Sports with just five minutes until stoppage time.
Trippier made his final appearance at St James’ Park as a Newcastle player before he leaves at the end of the season. He came off for Anthony Elanga in the 84th minute to a standing ovation from the Toon Army.
The 35-year-old didn’t initially take to the bench, though, as he spoke to Sky Sports about the game and his farewell. He’s bringing an end to a four-year stay with the Magpies and made his 160th appearance today.
Sky Sports’ bizarre Trippier interview
Trippier’s interview came with just minutes left in regulation time, with West Ham fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table. It was great for Newcastle fans to hear from the veteran right-back, but given the circumstances, some feel Sky Sports should have read the room.
The Hammers’ defeat means Nuno Espirito Santo’s men are on the brink of suffering relegation. They sit 18th, two points behind Tottenham Hotspur who have a game in hand.
Newcastle’s win came courtesy of a William Osula brace and Nick Woltemade’s first league goal since December. For the visitors, it couldn’t have been a worse evening and their supporters will have been seething with the broadcast nearing the dying embers of the game.
“Insane” – Fans hit out at Sky
Trippier’s interview didn’t go down well with viewers who were bemused by its timing. Sky Sports’ decision to talk to the player in a game that might have ended West Ham’s 14-year stay in the Premier League riled up many supporters.
One fan on X wrote: “My clubs losing 3-1, basically relegating us but lets cut to an interview with Kieran Trippier. Bring on the (Championship.”
Another supporter echoed this: “Absolutely no reason that Trippier interview can’t be done 10 minutes later when the game is finished. Absolute nonsense.”
One added: “Why do Sky think I (care) to see or listen to Trippier speak? Save it for the end of the game.”
Another wrote: “Why interview Trippier whilst the game is still being played? FFS.”
One responded: “Why the hell is there an interview with Trippier mid game ffs, what is going on.”
Another agreed: “Sky interviewing Kieran Trippier mid-game in a match which could potentially see West Ham down is insane. So disrespectful that.”
For Newcastle, it was a massive win that just helps quieten some of the noise surrounding Eddie Howe’s future. It’s been a difficult season for the Tyneside giants, who sit 11th with 49 points in 36 games.
