  • Newcastle United set for minimum £10.7m prize money
  • How much the Magpies could still make
  • European football possible but VERY unlikely

Today’s 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest has effectively confirmed that Newcastle United will not be playing European football next season.

However, in more positive news, it also ensured the Magpies cannot be relegated and guaranteed them at least £10.7m in prize money. While that may sound slightly tongue-in-cheek, every cash boost is important for the club right now.

Although the figure represents a significant drop compared to the rewards that come with a Champions League finish, it should not be dismissed given the chaotic nature of this campaign.

Newcastle United Premier League prize money

Watching the likes of Bournemouth and Brentford secure far greater rewards will not be particularly enjoyable for the Newcastle hierarchy.

However, the club can take some solace in the fact that the £10.7m comes with the opportunity for a fresh start and a chance to put things right next season.

It should also be noted that the £10.7m figure represents the reward for the Magpies’ current lowest possible finish, which is 17th — just one place above the relegation zone.

With two games remaining, there is still a fairly wide range of positions Newcastle could finish in, including the slim possibility of European qualification if every result falls in their favour.

Magpies could still earn £34.5m

In theory, the Magpies can still finish as high as eighth, which would bring in around £34.5m in prize money.

Chelsea face Sunderland, Sunderland take on Everton, and Newcastle themselves travel to Fulham on the final day. There are several fixtures that will directly impact where Howe’s side eventually finish.

The most realistic finishing range appears to be somewhere between 10th and 14th. The prize money for those positions that was awarded last year is £29.1m, £26.5m, £23.8m, £21.2m (current position), and £18.6m, respectively.

Each of those would be a much more comfortable sum than the £10.7m that is the current minimum secured amount for the club.
