‘Verbal agreement’ – Fabrizio Romano confirms bad news for Newcastle United

Newcastle United have had a tough summer transfer window. They have witnessed key players leave. I have already discussed those exits at length and there is not much left to say in that regard. Unfortunately, more could follow over the coming months.

On the other hand, the Magpies have had a tough time when it comes to bringing in their first-choice options to replace those that have left. On more than one occasion, they have missed out.

Victor Munoz chose to join Liverpool. Johan Manzambi headed to Aston Villa, even though Newcastle United had agreed a deal with SC Freiburg before them. And now, it looks like a third target has picked a different Premier League club.

Fabrizio Romano confirms bad transfer news for Newcastle United

It is no secret that Newcastle United need to strengthen between the posts this summer. Nick Pope could be on his way out while new arrival, Ewen Jaouen, might not be ready to be the starting goalkeeper just yet, having come in from Ligue 2 side Reims.

For months, it has been believed that Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford is Newcastle United’s first choice for that starting spot between the posts. But unfortunately, such a move does not seem to be on the cards any longer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Leeds United have reached a verbal agreement with Manchester City for a club-record deal to sign Trafford. The move has been given the Italian journalist’s famous ‘here we go’ seal of approval.

The club-to-club deal is in place for £40 million plus add-ons, and a long-term deal has been offered to Trafford. The signatures are expected this week.

Someone like Trafford could have been an excellent signing for Newcastle United. He is a young goalkeeper, but at the same time, he has a decent bit of experience under his belt as well.

Newcastle already have James Trafford alternative on their radar

Of course, there is not much that needs to be said about his potential. There is a reason Man City signed him. At the time, the expectation was that he would be their new starter.

But then, the opportunity emerged to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma. And as we know, Manchester City are not a club that lets such opportunities slip by.

As a result, Trafford found himself as the backup option through no fault of his own. He did prove his value when given a chance. Man City won both domestic cup competitions in which he was the starter.

Now, he is seeking first-team football. And it looks like Leeds United are going to be his next destination. So, the Magpies will need to turn their sights elsewhere.

To be fair, over the last couple of days, they have been heavily linked with a move for Sporting Braga goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek. There is believed to be a €30 million release clause in his contract.
