Newcastle United have announced a series of changes and upgrades to St James’ Park ahead of next season. This comes amid continued discussions around the future of the Magpies’ home, with either an expansion or a completely new build possible.

The club confirmed the improvements on Tuesday, citing fan feedback as the driving force behind the upgrades.

The Newcastle United matchday experience currently sits at 4.05 out of 5, according to supporters, with more than 27,000 providing feedback on the stadium this season.

Upgrades have been ongoing throughout this season and will continue over the summer in preparation for the next campaign.

A number of areas have been earmarked for improvement. The most prominent from the fans’ perspective include an upgraded PA system; floodlights being replaced with the latest lighting technology, which the club says will open the door to more entertainment opportunities; and work to deliver full 5G coverage throughout the stadium.

There are also ongoing facility improvements. Four locations have been identified for conversion into food and drink stands, and the club continues to explore upgrades to the range on offer for supporters.

The replacement and upgrade of seating is also continuing, with a further 2,000 seats in the North and South Stand paddocks improved this season, and more expected to follow over the summer.

What does it tell us?

Of course, upgrades like this are relatively minor in the grand scheme of things. However, given the current uncertainty surrounding the future of St James’ Park — amid talk of expansion or possible relocation — these developments may be telling.

At the very least, they suggest that whatever direction the club ultimately takes, a final decision is unlikely to be made or implemented any time soon.

There has been ongoing discussion about expanding St James’ Park, but this raises challenges due to the protected buildings surrounding the stadium.

Similarly, the idea of building into Leazes Park presents complications, including protected bat colonies and the logistical need to replace the green space that would be lost.

There have also been reports of new sites being assessed through feasibility studies, with a view to building from scratch, but nothing concrete has emerged so far.

Whatever the long-term plan, expanding capacity appears to be a complex task. The ongoing upgrades to St James’ Park suggest that, for now, the Magpies will continue playing there for the foreseeable future.
