Anthony Gordon sell-on clause: How much Everton could earn from Newcastle United sale

  • Newcastle United may miss out of portion of Anthony Gordon fee
  • Bayern Munich and Barcelona keen on Magpies transfer
  • Everton set to profit

Much of the early transfer news ahead of the summer window has been dominated by Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon. Some of the biggest clubs in the world are showing interest in the 25-year-old, with Bayern Munich and Barcelona applying pressure.

With some of Europe’s top teams circling the Magpies’ winger, you would expect a significant price tag; however, the Tyneside outfit are not set to pocket all of the cash received.

When he moved to St James’ Park from Everton, a £40 million fee plus £5 million in add-ons was agreed with the Blues. As part of that deal, according to the Shields Gazette, the Toffees also included a 15% sell-on clause for the Scouser. If Newcastle are to lose their star winger this summer, they also look set to forfeit a portion of the transfer fee.

Newcastle United slap £75 million price tag on Anthony Gordon

It is believed that Eddie Howe’s side would want to receive a fee in excess of £75 million this summer to allow Gordon to leave Tyneside, though that could be difficult for interested clubs to meet.

It has been one of the most challenging campaigns for the Magpies since the new ownership group took control, with the team currently outside the top 10. With that in mind, they will want to rebuild the squad this summer, but sales will be crucial in achieving their goals.

Losing a percentage of the fee they could receive for the 25-year-old would be damaging to their rebuild. While he has been scrutinised for his performances at St James’ Park, he has been one of the few attacking players to consistently find the back of the net.

With recent injuries keeping him out of the starting XI, many believe he is trying to engineer a move away. Several members of the Toon Army would not be opposed to his departure, but replacing a player of his quality—while also seeing a portion of the fee head to Merseyside—will be a difficult task for recruitment this summer.

Big summer ahead of Eddie Howe’s side

Under their Saudi-backed ownership, this is arguably Newcastle’s most important summer to date. It is a chance to show their resolve, bounce back in the right way, and push the club up the table.

Gordon’s potential sale would bring in funds, but where else can they raise cash? There has been speculation that Tino Livramento could depart, and given his injury record, it may be a sensible decision to cash in.

While it may not generate a significant fee, Nick Pope could also leave Tyneside and Sandro Tonali could attract interest from top clubs, much like Gordon.

The Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules have impacted the club in the past, and this sell-on clause could add further complications. However, this represents an opportunity to reset and make the changes that are urgently needed at Newcastle.
