- Newcastle United update on Anthony Gordon injury
- Will Magpies winger feature against Brighton?
- Eddie Howe speaks to press on Friday
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe provided a fresh update over the fitness of Anthony Gordon ahead of this weekend’s Premier League meeting with Brighton.
The Magpies winger missed out against AFC Bournemouth and Arsenal due to a hip injury, picked up in the week following defeat to Crystal Palace.
There had been some scepticism as to the nature of that injury, with the problem cropping up in a week that had seen Gordon reported to be pushing for a move away from St James’ Park.
Anthony Gordon linked with Newcastle United exit
The England international is admired by Bayern Munich in Germany with links to Premier League sides Arsenal and Liverpool as well. A supposed £75 million price tag has been put on Gordon’s head with the former Everton man supposedly feeling he had ‘outgrown’ the project on Tyneside.

Howe has refused to be drawn in on transfer speculation but was adamant that the forward’s absence was due to a real injury, and not any dark arts behind the scenes. Following the Arsenal match, Howe said: “Anthony Gordon is injured. 100%. So it’s a non-question (about his commitment).”
The Magpies manager has now provided an update on the player ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Brighton. Newcastle are in desperate need of a positive result to end a run of five defeats across all competitions.
Gordon injury update ahead of Brighton
In his press conference on Friday, Howe said: “He did part of a session on Wednesday. It was great to see him back on the pitch. He’s a player of huge quality and one that we’ve missed. We’ll make an assessment on his fitness closer to the game.”
Those words would point to a potential return for Gordon against Brighton. Regardless of the transfer speculation, that would be a boost for Newcastle.
Gordon is the side’s top scorer this season and his added impetus could help the hosts end a run of six meetings against the Seagulls without a win.
Speaking about his season at the turn of the year, Gordon had said: “Statistically I haven’t been where I want to be as a player – I want to be right at the very top – but for the most part I’ve had consistency in my performances.
“Nowadays stats are all that matters it seems and that’s ruined football a little bit. You can play well – do so much for your team but if you don’t score or assist you haven’t played well!
“I don’t really think about it because ultimately I’m trying – there’s nothing more I can do than that. I haven’t had too many chances where I should have scored – if I had that would bother me.
“But I’m playing well and in all the right positions. Sometimes you just need that bit of luck.”
In other news, Newcastle United can beat Brighton if Anthony Gordon repeats infamous Everton heroics.
