- Newcastle United v West Ham team news
- Lewis Hall update after on pitch treatment
- West Ham could be without winger
Newcastle United will be relieved to hear that one West Ham player is a doubt for this weekend’s meeting at St James’ Park as the Magpies look to bounce back from late heartbreak against Nottingham Forest.
Elliot Anderson‘s leveller effectively ended hopes of European football next term and was made all the more painful given his history on Tyneside. The Forest midfielder’s bustling run was too quick for Magpies defenders.
Eddie Howe’s side have been criticised for a lack of energy in recent months and West Ham have a rapid winger who could certainly capitalise on that. Luckily for the hosts, the Spanish international is a doubt for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.
Newcastle United team news
Newcastle United came through against Nottingham Forest without any new injury scares. Lewis Hall did require treatment for a problem in the second half, which raised concern given his fitness record.
However, the England international completed the match and Howe said: “He got a few [knocks] early. He got one in the face, where I think he chipped a tooth. And then his injury at the end, I think was more of a knock, so he was able to run that off.”
Tino Livramento is unlikely to feature again for the Magpies this season due to a thigh injury picked up in the defeat to AFC Bournemouth. The defender has an outside chance of appearing in the curtain closer against Fulham but will miss out this weekend at St James’ Park.
Last week, Howe said: “Tino’s doing well, he’s back running on the grass. I don’t think he’ll be back this season. We could possibly push him for the Fulham game, but I think that’d be silly on his behalf, so let’s let him recover and have a good summer.”
Lewis Miley broke his leg in training last week in a serious blow for the youngster, and has since undergone successful surgery. Howe said: “It was a really innocuous moment training on Tuesday.
“There was no-one around him, no other player involved and he slipped. At that moment we thought maybe a twist, but he was unable to continue and we realised it was more serious than we thought.
“He faces a few months out, we hope he’ll be back in and around pre-season. It’s a real shame because he was playing really well, a real blow for us but also for Lewis. But knowing his strength of character, he’ll be back better than ever.”
Emil Krafth is a long term absentee. Fabian Schar is closer to a return but a recent foot infection has set back his recovery and the centre-back remains absent.
Outs – Tino Livramento, Lewis Miley, Emil Krafth, Fabian Schar.
West Ham team news
West Ham are blessed with an almost fully fit squad for the final weeks of the season as Nuno look to complete the great escape from the clutches of relegation.
Adama was absent from the matchday squad to face Arsenal, missing out for the first time since arriving at the club from Fulham in January. Our sister site ReadWestHam reported that Adama had aggravated his quad in training last week.
The Spaniard has faced the Magpies 13 times in his career but won just four of those, registering one assist against Newcastle for Wolves and one for Fulham. Although, in the Cottagers’ 2-1 win at St James’ Park last year, The Guardian claimed that the Magpies ‘couldn’t handle’ the pace of Adama.
Veteran goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski is a long term absentee and hasn’t featured in a squad since the visit of Tottenham Hotspur to the London Stadium at the end of September.
Doubts – Adama Traore. Outs – Lukasz Fabianski.
