- Shola Ameobi claims it’s been a ‘good season’
- Bruno Guimaraes had confronted recent Newcastle United complacency
- Why Brazil international’s honest stance is way forwards
Many Newcastle United fans, players and staff should be angered by a poor season given the standards set under Eddie Howe – indeed, Bruno Guimaraes has been. Former Magpies player Shola Ameobi disagrees, insisting “it’s been a good season”.
The Nigerian now works at the club, helping identify players for loan moves. In an interview with Flashscore.com, he explained the reasoning behind their displays this season.
He said: “Ultimately, you can’t win every season. Every competition is difficult. Everyone’s getting better around you.
“Obviously, injuries have had a big impact. On paper, it might not look like we’re where we want to be, but ultimately, it’s been a good season.”
While the 44-year-old takes that view, captain Bruno Guimaraes has been far more critical of the campaign.
Shola Ameobi looks for positives in Newcastle United struggles
Howe’s side sit 14th after an incredible season last year, which saw them qualify for the Champions League and win the Carabao Cup.
There have been clear backward steps in both results and performances. Wins over Manchester United and Chelsea in recent months have been positives, but games against Sunderland have exposed deeper issues.
Pressure is mounting on Howe, with sections of the Toon Army calling for change, but Ameobi urged patience.
He said: “There’s still some games left, so let’s see where the team finishes at the end of the season.”
Elsewhere, Guimaraes told ESPN Brasil after a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal that complacency has crept in.
He said: “Without a doubt, this has been the worst season since I’ve been here. We’ve done great things for the club recently.
“I don’t know if some players got a little complacent; overall, we got a little complacent, but it’s not a good season.”
While Ameobi is not directly involved with the first team, the contrast in views highlights a divide during a period of uncertainty that could bring major change this summer.
Bruno Guimaraes is a true leader
These comments underline the Brazilian’s importance and the impact of his recent injury, from which he has only just returned.
Players like Guimaraes influence not just performances, but the overall environment within the squad, which appears to have dipped in recent months.
He understands the weight of his words, especially with his manager under pressure, but it shows the players are taking accountability for a disappointing season. We need more of that, rather than Ameobi excuses.
