As another Premier League campaign is set to come to a close, World Cup fever has gripped every football fan and four weeks of the ultimate celebration are set to commence, with Newcastle United players ready to star. You can follow all the action this summer on our sister site, ReadWorldCup.
The team from the North East will have plenty of representatives at this year’s competition, and following Thomas Tuchel’s England call-ups in March, the Toon Army may be able to celebrate several players for the Three Lions this summer.
While it’s been a tough campaign at St James’ Park, it showcases the lengths the club has gone to in building a fantastic squad to reflect their new project at the heart of one of the biggest sporting tournaments in the world.
Newcastle United players to watch at the 2026 North World Cup
One of the main men for the Magpies over several years has been Bruno Guimarães. The 28-year-old was part of the 2022 squad in Brazil, but it’s believed he will have a much more active role under Carlo Ancelotti this time around.
Brazil have gone two decades without lifting the World Cup, their joint-longest drought since victory in the USA in 1994. Joga Bonito hope their prayers can be answered as they return to the States in search of the promised land.
DR Congo makes a return to the World Cup for the first time since 1974, becoming the first Sub-Saharan African team to reach the competition. Yoane Wissa has had a difficult season at the Black and Whites, though he has been the main man throughout the qualifying rounds.
The German duo Nick Woltemade and Malick Thiaw will be expected to be part of the side that travels west. Deutschland’s previous attempts have failed to land a blow on the big teams, with embarrassment on the biggest stage coming their way in recent tournaments.
The Three Lions will mark 60 years since their first and only World Cup triumph this summer. Two local lads were heroes that year in Jack and Bobby Charlton, though they never represented the Magpies.
This time around, there are many candidates. Anthony Gordon, Tino Livramento, Harvey Barnes, and loanee Aaron Ramsdale are all in contention, but the standout from the group is Lewis Hall, who will battle Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly to start at left-back.
Elsewhere, Sven Botman could partner Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, but it’s likely he will be on the bench or not even included in the squad.
Anthony Elanga will face the Netherlands in Group F for Sweden, alongside former Newcastle forward Alexander Isak.
Ambitions at the 2026 World Cup
For many of these players, travelling to MetLife Stadium on July 19th and lifting the trophy high into the sky is the dream, though an unrealistic one.
In a Magpies side that looks void of confidence and belief in their ability, a successful tournament could be significant in how the club turns a corner next season.
Fears of injuries and fatigue will be present, as the ever-growing football calendar has put many of the biggest stars at increased risk of physical strain.
A team that was once scrambling around the bottom of the league now has many players representing their countries this summer. Although it’s been far from perfect this year, the chance to see your club’s players succeed on the grand stage is one of the greatest feelings for a supporter.
