Bayern Munich director Max Eberl has issued a statement over transfer links with Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon amid talk of a £75 million summer switch for the England international.

Gordon has found himself in the spotlight in recent weeks, despite not featuring on the pitch for the Magpies. The 25-year-old has been nursing a hip injury, which kept him out against AFC Bournemouth last weekend and against Arsenal on Saturday evening.

Newcastle paid £45 million to sign Gordon from Everton in 2023 and the player has gone on to cement himself as one of the top rated wingers in the Premier League, as well as impressing on the Champions League stage.

Bayern Munich respond to Anthony Gordon transfer rumours

Gordon has 39 goals and 28 assists in 152 outings for the Magpies but is reported to feel that he has ‘outgrown’ the project on Tyneside under Eddie Howe. That has fuelled talk of a summer transfer.

Bayern Munich are one of the clubs who have been increasingly linked in recent weeks, with a £75 million asking price put on Gordon’s head by the club. Newcastle must sell before they buy this summer amid financial pressure.

Arsenal and Liverpool have also been credited with interest in Gordon. Eberl was asked about the links this weekend and provided a response.

He said: “Anthony Gordon deal? It’d be disrespectful to talk about players under contract. We can have a relaxed approach to the market, being smart this summer.”

Eddie Howe wants focus away from transfers

That response will be music to the ears of Magpies boss Eddie Howe. Even if Gordon’s exit may feel inevitable, Howe has been outspoken about how the rumours can be distracting for players.

Speaking in February, Howe said: “I’m not sure there’s a lot I can do about that. I’ve not seen the story, so it’s news to me. But we’re mid-season, we’re in the middle of some of the biggest games of his career and who knows what’s going to happen internationally with him in the summer as well.

“He’s got no time to look left or right, he’s got to be fully focused on straight ahead and the next game and trying to be as good as he can be.

“I’ve been really impressed with him the last few weeks, I think he’s been in a good place. Playing in a central position, I think he’s done really well and we want him to continue that good form.”

In other news, Newcastle United sent ’emphatic’ Public Investment Fund message.
