  • Newcastle United look to add Tottenham Hotspur player to squad
  • Conor Gallagher likely to leave if Spurs go down
  • Ex Chelsea man yet to win since switch to North London

Newcastle United’s summer transfer window is beginning to take shape, with one area in certain need of change being the midfield, and one man that could be available to them this coming window is Tottenham Hotspur’s Conor Gallagher.

SportsBoom reveal that the Magpies are considering a move for the English midfielder this summer, and it would become a real possibility if the Lilywhites get relegated from the Premier League.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side dropped points once again this weekend, in a 2-2 draw at home to Brighton, and with Nottingham Forest and Leeds both winning their games this weekend, it puts them in an even more precarious position.

It’s understood Spurs would look to recoup the money spent on him in January, which was £35 million.

Newcastle United linked with Conor Gallagher transfer

The 26-year-old has plenty of Premier League experience in his legs at this stage of his career, playing for Spurs, Chelsea and Crystal Palace, as well as European experience at current Champions League semi-finalists, Atletico Madrid.

Since moving back to the capital this January for £34 million, he has only missed one Premier League game yet, with the poor displays at the club, he is still to win a game. Gallagher got his only assist at his new club in a 2-2 draw against Manchester City.

Gallagher is notorious for working hard in the middle of the pitch, which is something Eddie Howe wants from his players, if he is to remain at St James’ Park.

He is a solid eight who can offer creativity in attacking phases, while also knowing how to defend when required.

While the Black and Whites have extreme quality in their midfield, their depth has been questionable, and injuries have showcased this, with forward Nick Woltemade playing in the midfield trio regularly in recent months.

Newcastle midfield repair job

Several key players look to be on their way out of Tyneside this summer, with recent updates regarding Anthony Gordon being a sign of this.

One player who seems as though he will also be leaving is Sandro Tonali, who has settled alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton to make up the heart of the team.

Missing out on European football will be a significant consequence, which will could see the Italian leave.

Gallagher cannot be his replacement if they hope to get back into Champions League or even Europa League contention next season.

As a squad option, he would be viable, but there is a reason Atletico Madrid sold him, and that’s because he lacks the technical ability to be a starter in a top team.

The links are interesting, but making him a first-team starter would once again expose Newcastle’s neglect in the transfer window.
