- Coventry City earn Premier League promotion
- Newcastle United set to face Sky Blues for first time since 2010
- 4-1 win revisited
Luckily for Newcastle United, despite the poor form of late, Premier League status is all but confirmed for next season (yes, it has reached that point). That means that, with the confirmation of Coventry City’s promotion from the Championship, the two clubs will face each other for the first time since 2010 next season.
The last time the two faced each other was in February of the Magpies’ 2010 Championship campaign.
Newcastle were scrapping away at the top of the table, and Coventry were looking to keep touch with the play-off race.
So, with the confirmation of the fixture returning to the calendar next year, let’s have a look back at the game and how it unfolded… we could all do with a break from the current state of play anyway, couldn’t we?
Newcastle United 4 – 1 Coventry City
Despite the emphatic scoreline, Newcastle actually went behind in the fixture.
It took until the 35th minute for Coventry to break the deadlock, when none other than Clinton Morrison fired home to give the visitors the lead.
Admittedly, the deficit was rather short-lived for the Magpies, with Wayne Routledge volleying Newcastle back level just two minutes later.
Just ten minutes after the second period got underway, Andy Carroll nodded home in trademark style to put Chris Hughton’s men in the driving seat for the first time.
Wayne Routledge was involved again, winning a penalty in the 70th minute, which saw a second yellow card branded to Leon Barnett, reducing the visitors to 10 men.
Peter Lovenkrands tucked away the spot kick to extend Newcastle’s lead and almost certainly clinch the three points.
There was yet more fun to be had for the Magpies, who furthered their advantage once more in the dying embers courtesy of substitute Ryan Taylor’s last-minute strike.
The final whistle would shortly follow to seal an emphatic 4-1 win for Newcastle. It was a result that saw the Magpies pull a three-point gap on the chasing West Brom.
The gap would grow to 11 points for Hughton’s men come the end of the season, with Newcastle accumulating one of the highest points tallies ever seen in the Championship and winning the title.
Frank Lampard and Coventry to return to St James’ Park
The two clubs are set to renew acquaintances for the first time in 16 years next season, albeit in very different circumstances.
A lot has happened since 2010, with rather drastically different fortunes for each.
For Newcastle United, there was another Championship campaign and some Premier League relegation battles, but the large majority of the very recent history has been successful.
Under Eddie Howe, the club have reached the heights of the Champions League on two occasions amidst a new ownership that affords them the richest owners in world football.
The Magpies have also broken their duck by winning a first domestic trophy in over 70 years. Coventry City’s journey has been a lot more tumultuous, it must be said.
The Sky Blues have been in every division of the football league, from League Two all the way to the present and back to the Premier League.
