- Newcastle United enter race for Jeremy Monga
- 16-year-old ‘perfect’ fit for new recruitment structure
- Magpies face competition from Arsenal and Manchester United
Newcastle United are among a host of Premier League clubs vying for the services of exciting Leicester City youngster Jeremy Monga this summer, according to Football Insider.
Leicester are currently embroiled in a fierce relegation battle in the Championship, which they are on course to lose as it stands. This has led to the Foxes’ accepting the potential loss of Monga when the summer window rolls around, mainly in line with the financial issues they are currently facing.
The Magpies are set to battle it out with some of the Premier League’s top clubs for Monga’s signature, with Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal and both Manchester clubs keen on the 16-year-old.
Monga ‘perfect’ for Newcastle summer recruitment
As is well documented at this stage, Newcastle United have shifted their recruitment focus ahead of the summer window. The focus is now on young, high-potential players who can grow with the club and/or first-team squad immediately.
The Magpies have already announced the signing of Johan Martinez from Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle. The 16-year-old will join the club when he turns 18.
Currently 16 years old, Monga would be the perfect fit for the new structure. The winger emerged from Leicester’s academy in their ’24/’25 Premier League campaign, making his debut at 15 with a blank shirt due to the Foxes’ betting sponsor at the time.
Newcastle has proved a decent ground for platforming academy graduates and youngsters in recent times, with the likes of Lewis Miley and Elliot Anderson progressing into the first team and beyond. The Magpies have also signed top English talents such as Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento and developed them into top players.
This could position the Magpies as an intriguing option for Monga, especially considering the refocus of transfer strategy.
Is Monga ready for a step up?
Monga has made 25 Championship appearances for Leicester this season, albeit only seven of those coming as starts. He has managed a goal and two assists in those limited minutes, looking sharp and lively in those cameos too.
Leicester City isn’t exactly the sort of environment you can expect a youngster to thrive in the current climate, so it is difficult to say exactly what sort of involvement Monga is ready for.
However, at 16 years old, regular first-team minutes aren’t on the cards no matter what Premier League club he chooses. Taking the step to a Premier League academy and continuing to learn alongside seasoned top-level professionals in training, or being sent on loan somewhere he can continue to develop, does feel like a logical next step.
Could Monga become a Premier League starter?
Not to get carried away, as he is only 16, but Monga has all the attributes to become a top winger in the future.
He is exceptionally quick off the mark and has an innate ability to use both feet, which makes him wildly dangerous and unpredictable for defenders.
That lends him to being versatile as well, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Monga play off both sides once he fully develops.
As you’d expect, he has a certain naivety in decision-making, but that is to be expected.
His development will have to be carefully managed going forward, to both protect his youthful enthusiasm and raw fearlessness, whilst also refining his game to be sustainable on the elite stage and polishing the weapons in his arsenal.
