A lot of change seems to be on the way at Newcastle this summer, whether that’s in the dugout or out on the pitch.

Spanish paper AS reports hat the Magpies are keeping an eye on 19-year-old Real Madrid defender Diego Aguado, who has been impressive in the Spanish capital this year.

He would be a great addition to Eddie Howe’s side, if he remains manager, as he offers versatility to a strong backline. He has operated at centre back and can also feature at left back, which will allow Lewis Hall to be rested.

Aguado made his La Liga debut midway through March as a substitute in a 4-1 win over Elche. He’s an exciting prospect who seems to be on the Magpies’ wishlist.

Aguado’s Career so far

Aguado has been with the 15-time Champions League side his whole career, making a name for himself through the youth tiers and eventually becoming a key player in their Castilla side.

He’s part of the Spanish side’s UEFA Youth League team, which beat Sporting Lisbon in the quarterfinals, as they have a great chance to win the competition this campaign.

On top of that, he has become a regular for the Spanish U19 team, playing a full 90 minutes in their 4-1 victory over Norway back in February.

His steady climb has gained him a lot of suitors ahead of what could be his final summer at the prestigious club, with them already having plenty of quality at the back.

Last summer, reports claimed that Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund were keen on bringing him to Germany, but nothing materialised. It’s yet to be seen whether they will come back in for him this summer.

The decision will be in his hands whether he looks to gain valuable experience abroad, or takes his chances on impressing Alvaro Arbeloa.

Defensive Rebuild, but a Necessary Signing?

The Magpies are staring at yet another busy summer transfer window, with links away and links to people arriving.

Sandro Tonali has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, while Tino Livramento has been touted as a potential signing for Manchester City or Arsenal.

With Dan Burn turning 34 during the 2026/27 campaign, injury issues with Sven Botman and Fabian Schar continuing and a sense to restart their project at the back, new faces will have to be on their way to Tyneside.

However, is the 19-year-old someone who can be trusted to be a player in this new-look Newcastle team?

He has made just one league appearance, and he won’t be their most expensive signing of the summer, but he won’t be cheap either.

If Howe’s side are to progress, they can’t make side steps; they must do what they did in the first place. Sign exciting, already-known players from the best leagues.

Aguado has a high ceiling, but he might be better off trying to achieve that somewhere other than St James’ Park.
