- Arsenal want Newcastle attacker Anthony Gordon
- The Gunners ‘will bid’ for the Englishman
- Eddie Howe won’t want to lose him
Newcastle United attacker Anthony Gordon is reportedly on Arsenal’s radar, and the Gunners are preparing to make an offer for the Englishman. He is one of Eddie Howe’s main men but could depart.
Gordon has enjoyed a fine spell at St James’ Park since arriving from Everton back in January 2023 for £45m. This season, he has appeared 45 times across competitions, posting 17 goals and five assists.
Arsenal are thought to be on the lookout for a new left-winger amid Gabriel Martinelli’s inconsistent form and Leandro Trossard’s uncertain future. They seem keen to bring Gordon to the Emirates.
Gordon Going?
According to Football Transfers, Arsenal “will make a bid” for Gordon at the end of the season. Mikel Arteta wants this summer’s transfer window to focus on English acquisitions.
Gordon is Newcastle’s top scorer this season and a key player in Howe’s team. He’s not just played out wide on the left but also in a centre-forward role.
There have been suggestions that the Magpies might need to make one or two big sales to conduct much-needed transfer business. But the club don’t wish to sell Gordon who has just over four years on his contract.
Gordon isn’t the only Newcastle star on Arsenal’s radar, as Tino Livramento is also wanted by Arteta. The young Englishman has been superb over the past few seasons, claiming the right-back starting berth from Kieran Trippier.
Manchester City are also thought to be keen on Livramento, who joined the Magpies from Southampton back in August 2023. He will have two years left on his contract in June, and there is a strong possibility he will move on.
What Gordon Has Said About His Future
Gordon started his Newcastle career frustratingly, failing to initially earn a regular run in Howe’s starting lineup. There were many who questioned the fee paid for his services but he silenced his critics once he fully adapted to life at St James’ Park.
The English forward played an important role in the Carabao Cup triumph, albeit missing the 2-1 final win over Liverpool due to suspension. He has come to the fore many times while wearing black-and-white stripes.
Gordon opened up on speculation over his future back in February. He told reporters (via Sky Sports):
“I am focused on me and focused on the team, I am focused on right now. You look too far in the future and you start to underperform. And believe me, I have done that (before) and I am not going to do that now.”
Gordon looks likely to be named in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup this summer. His full focus will be on securing a seat on the plane before any talk of a potential transfer.
