Newcastle United have reportedly joined Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa in the race to sign Leeds United defender Pascal Struijk ahead of the summer transfer window, per Sports Boom.
The 26-year-old has emerged as a key target for several Premier League outfits following another consistent campaign at Elland Road. He’s now garnered interest from three of the Whites’ rivals and could be on the move.
Newcastle signed Malick Thiaw last summer but seem keen to strengthen their defence. The likes of Dan Burn, 33, and Fabian Schar, 34, are entering the twilight years of their careers.
Growing Premier League interest
Struijk has been one of Leeds’ most consistent players this season, starting regularly and playing a key role since their return to the Premier League.
His consistency and command at the back have made him a potential prospect for many clubs looking to strengthen their defensive department. Newcastle, Tottenham and Aston Villa are understood to have placed the defender on their shortlist as they prepare for a busy summer.
Leeds, on the other hand, are reluctant sellers and are expected to demand a fee in the region of 30 million pounds, reflecting both their importance and the current market for left-footed centre-backs.
Why the Magpies Want Struijk?
For Newcastle, adding more depth at the back is a priority. Defensive fragilities in recent games, especially after conceding seven against Barcelona, have exposed the need for reliable options at the back, particularly with the demands of competing across several competitions.
The Dutch centre-back’s profile fits what Eddie Howe looks for in a defender. Just 26, he combines a decent Premier League experience with still room for development, while his ability to play as a central defender or a left back adds further value.
His composure on the ball, along with his aerial presence, also matches Newcastle’s playing style, making him a potential fit within the Magpies’ system.
Struijk Signature
Newcastle are unlikely to have a clear run at the player as Spurs are reportedly keen to add defensive depth. Villa also see him as a potential replacement option if there are any departures in their back line.
With multiple clubs. Interested and Leeds holding firm on their valuation, this could develop into a competitive transfer battle as the window approaches.
For Newcastle, securing a player like Struijk would represent another step in strengthening the squad depth. However, with rival clubs looming over, the Magpies may need to come to a decision soon if they are to win the race for the Leeds defender’s signature.
