Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has paid tribute to Kieran Trippier following confirmation of the defender’s departure. The veteran right-back is departing St James’ Park at the end of the season.

Trippier and the club announced the news on Saturday (April 3rd) and it had long been expected. The 35-year-old’s contract expires in June, and the club are clearly thinking about the future.

Taking to social media, Shearer described the right-back as “brilliant”, highlighting his influence during an important revolutionary period in the club’s modern history.

Shearer Salutes Trippier

Trippier’s exit has sparked an outpouring of appreciation, including from Shearer. The English right back is highly regarded by the Newcastle faithful, not just for his performances but also for the standards he set from day one.

Shearer wrote on X:

“You have been brilliant Tripps.”

Trippier’s leadership has helped steer the club at the club during his four years on Tyneside. His arrival was the first major signing of the Saudi ownership, and the Magpies flew from a relegation scrap and into the Champions League race.

Numbers Tell The Story

Across his time on Tyneside, Trippier has made a total of 115 appearances, scoring four goals, including the brilliant free-kick at home against Manchester City. He has also assisted more than 20 times from right back, with many coming from his trademark set-piece delivery.

Trippier’s influence went far beyond numbers, and those stats underline his consistency and importance. Whether it was a pinpoint free or a cross, he delivered when it mattered.

As a captain leading from the back, he also played a pivotal role in guiding the team back amongst the elites. His leadership helped Newcastle move from fighting for their lives in the bottom end of the table to a competitive force once again.

End of an era

As curtains draw over his time at Tyneside, his transfer from Atletico Madrid was a statement of intent. He is a leader who helped change the club’s culture. After two strong seasons back to Champions League and an unforgettable Carabao Cup win, he has forever cemented his name in the Magpie folklore.

Replacing a presence like him won’t be easy for Eddie Howe, especially given how important Trippier has been both on and off the pitch. Shearer’s comment says it all: “Brilliant!” For the fans, it’s more than praise. It’s a reflection of a player who redefined Newcastle and brought belief back to St James’ Park.
