Italian Media Give Tonali Verdict After Italy’s Shock Defeat to Bosnia

  • Italy crashed out after shock defeat to Bosnia on penalties
  • Sandro Tonali was widely praised by Italian media despite the loss.
  • Gli Azzurri “cannot do” without Newcastle midfielder.

Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time after a dramatic penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina, but Sandro Tonali received heaps of praise despite the result.

Moise Kean gave Gennaro Gattuso’s men the lead, but Alessandro Bastoni’s red card proved costly. Haris Tabovakovic equalised for Bosnia and the two sides couldn’t find a winner in extra time.

A penalty shootout went the way of the Bosnians, who scored all four of their spot kicks. The only one of the three on target for Italy was, of course, Tonali.

The Newcastle United midfielder was one of the few positives on a disappointing night for the Italians. The Italian media were quick to highlight his performance in contrast to the rest of the team.

Tonali shines in defeat

While Italy struggled as a whole, Tonali’s performance stood out. Italian outlet Calciomercato have bluntly stated, “This national team can’t do without their number 8.”

The Newcastle midfielder’s influence was seen throughout the game. Calciomercato further added in their report, saying:

“He’s simply everywhere: pressing all over the pitch, he creates the only opportunities that trouble Bosnia’s defence. He’s the only one who manages to convert his own penalty in the lottery that eliminates us.”

His energy and intensity helped Italy drive forward in the game where chances were scarce, especially after Bastoni’s sending off. His performance underlined just how reliant Italy were on his quality in the final third.

Lone Positive in Poor Italian Display

The wider verdict from the Italian media was damning. Gli Azzuri were heavily criticised for their lack of cutting-edge creativity. Manager Gattuso, who has since left his role, also came under fire after failing to steer Italy into their first World Cup since 2014.

However, Tonali was largely exempt from that criticism. His performance was praised for his composure in the key moments. Even in defeat, the midfielder showed leadership, great work rate and technical quality.

What it Means for Newcastle

For the Magpies, the reaction will come as no surprise. Tonali’s ability to influence games at both ends of the pitch continues to grow, and with performances like this, he reinforces his value to both club and country.

Still on 25, he is increasingly seen as a cornerstone of Italy’s future and a key figure in Newcastle’s future if they manage to keep him.

While the result hurts the Azzuri, Tonali’s display serves as a reminder of his sheer quality. In a night of collective disappointment, he stood out as the one player capable of making a difference.

Tonali’s future is uncertain heading into the final stretch of the season at St James’ Park. He’s been linked with Manchester United and there are suggestions that talks between the player’s agents and the Red Devils have taken place.
