Chris Waddle believes Newcastle United could hold an advantage in the race for Elliot Anderson despite growing interest from Premier League giants. Manchester City and Manchester United are both eyeing the Nottingham Forest midfielder.
Anderson looks all but certain to be on the move this summer and for a hefty fee. He’s on both Manchester clubs’ wishlists but a return to St James’ Park can’t be ruled out.
A report in mid-March claimed that Newcastle were considering re-signing Anderson. He left the club back in July 2024, joining Forest in a £35m deal.
Waddle Makes Anderson-Newcastle Claim
Anderson has become one of the hottest prospects in the league following his rapid development since leaving Tyneside. Interest from clubs like Manchester United and Manchester City highlights his rapid rise.
Waddle believes the player’s connection to Newcastle could prove decisive. He said (via Shields Gazzette):
“Elliot Anderson is a Newcastle fan. He’s a Geordie. He’ll not be in a rush but the chance of going back to Newcastle? I’m sure he’s always wanted to play in those black and white stripes and I’m sure he’ll be up for it.”
Anderson has appeared 41 times across competitions this season for Forest, registering two goals and three assists. He is extremely likely not only to make England’s World Cup squad but to be a starter.
Emotional pull of Tyneside
Anderson’s ties to Newcastle go way back. The Whitley Bay born academy graduate came through the ranks at the club before being sold to Forest as a part of financial balancing.
Since then, his price tag has significantly increased amid consistent performances week in week out. He has earned himself international recognition and has managed to attract attention from top clubs in the Premier League.
However, sentiments could still play a role according to Waddle. Similar to Newcastle legend Alan Shearer, the idea of returning to his boyhood club where he first started could be a powerful factor amid growing transfer speculation.
It’s been a dream come true to represent my club for 14 years. Pulling that black and white shirt on at St James park is a moment that will never be taken away from me. Anderson admitted after leaving the Magpies that he was ‘sad’ and “really tough” to take. He made 55 appearances for his boyhood club.
Reunion Unlikely
Despite the emotional advantage, any deal would be far from being straight forward. Newcastle would face strong competition financially, with both Manchester United and Manchester City capable of offering significant transfer fees and wages.
As things stand, the situation is still speculative but its clear if the Forest midfielder does manage to get a move this summer, the Magpies may still have a chance. But he might be enticed to make a switch to a Champions League competing club and that’s extremely unlikely to be Eddie Howe’s side.
