- Bruno Guimaraes’ agent speaks on Man Utd rumours
- A new contract in the pipeline?
- A big summer ahead for Newcastle
Newcastle’s rather torrid week was made even worse with the growing rumours surrounding captain Bruno Guimarães and a summer move to Manchester United. But now, his agent has seemingly put those stories to rest with a cryptic tweet on X yesterday.
Bruno was not involved in either of Newcastle’s disastrous games last week as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury. But that didn’t stop the Brazilian from taking over headlines when transfer rumours started swirling during the week.
The rumour coincided with the increasing possibility that Newcastle will miss out on European football next season. It comes off the back of being knocked out of the Champions League at the hands of Barcelona. Plus the derby loss which saw an opportunity to close the gap on the European places squandered.
Reports, which initially began at the hands of the same source that outed Bruno’s move from Lyon to Newcastle, stated that Bruno’s representatives had been in touch with the Manchester club over a possible transfer.
Bruno’s agent has his say
The club’s initial response to the story was that all of this was new information. Stating they had heard nothing about the proposed conversations.
Bruno’s agent appeared to largely confirm those reports from the club in a rather cryptic, yet telling, tweet on X yesterday.
Alexis Malavolta, the Newcastle captain’s long-standing agent who was a large part of his client’s initial move to the North East, posted nothing but a question mark to his social media.
Whilst not an obvious condemnation of the reports. Many Newcastle fans have taken the post as confirmation that there is no truth to the rumours.
A new contract ploy?
Interestingly, the speculation is very much in tandem with reports that Bruno is looking to sit down and discuss a new contract at Newcastle.
There is the possibility it is a coincidence, but the most likely outcome is that the transfer talk is manufactured to force Newcastle’s hand with a contract.
It is a tactic often employed by a player’s representatives. Leaking a marginally fabricated story to spring the club into action and secure the future of their important players.
The Magpies will likely be under fire from all angles this summer and face a battle to keep their stars. Meaning this could well just be the first in a multitude of rumour mills they have to navigate.
A sign of things to come
Eddie Howe’s men are already all too aware of what a summer clouded in speculation can look like. In fact, they are still facing the after-effects of Alexander Isak’s saga last year.
Should the club not manage to secure European football, holding on to top players will be an uphill battle.
Of those currently in the squad, Bruno, Sandro Tonali, Livramento and Anthony Gordon have all been linked with moves away.
Should even two of those materialise, Newcastle will face another long and difficult window. Making the most of the market ahead of another gruelling Premier League season in 26/27 will be crucial.
