- Sandro Tonali isn’t fit for Newcastle vs Sunderland
- The Italian picked up an injury vs Barcelona
- A win is vital for the Magpies
Sandro Tonali won’t be available for the Tyne-Wear derby between Newcastle United and Sunderland today (March 22nd). In a massive setback for Eddie Howe, the Italian midfielder isn’t fit to face the Black Cats at St James’ Park.
During a 7-2 loss to Barcelona on Tuesday, Tonali came off with a groin issue, and there were concerns he’d sustained a serious injury. A lengthy lay-off was ruled out, but his availability for the derby was to be determined on the day.
Tonali Out of the Derby
Howe spoke ahead of the game and suggested there was hope that the Italian might be fit to play. He told reporters:
“We will wait and see on Sandro. It is maybe not as bad as first feared. We will see how he is today and make a decision closer to the game.”
Sky Sports’ Keith Downie has confirmed that Tonali will miss the game against Sunderland. He was spotted at St James’ Park but not wearing a club tracksuit, unlike his teammates.
Tonali has been vital for Newcastle this season, posting three goals and seven assists in 47 games across competitions. His absence means Howe will be without the 25-year-old and club captain Bruno Guimaraes, who is recovering from a hamstring injury.
The Magpies head into the game following a devastating defeat at Camp Nou midweek. All focus is on the Premier League and ending the season with European qualification.
They face a Sunderland side that has sprung a surprise since earning promotion last season. Regis Le Bris’ men won the reverse fixture 1-0 at the Stadium of Light in December.
Newcastle Must Win
It will be unthinkable for Howe’s side to suffer defeat today, given the disaster that ensued against Barca. The pressure is slightly growing on the English coach whose side have endured a fall from grace after winning the Carabao Cup last season.
Tonali’s absence is a huge blow and means the Magpies will again line up without two of their most important players. Guimaraes’ leadership has been a massive miss in recent weeks, and that showed during the capitulation to the Catalans.
A win over Sunderland is crucial, not least because it keeps the Tyneside giants in the race for European qualification. But it also lifts the mood after such a humiliating Champions League exit.
