Newcastle blow as Saint-Maximin could miss Liverpool clash

Newcastle United travel to face Liverpool on Wednesday evening and may be without Allan Saint-Maximin after Eddie Howe gave an injury update on the 25-year-old.

The Magpies manager revealed in Tuesday’s pre-match press conference that Saint-Maximin ‘is a worry’ after picking up a knock in Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Howe said: “We’ve got Maxi who is a worry for us at the moment. It was late in the game, off the back of his sprint to try and save the goal.” Bruno Guimaraes has been all but ruled out of the midweek clash, but Saint-Maximin would be a big blow.

The uncapped Frenchman has made four Premier League appearances this season, scoring one goal with two assists. He’s created seven chances, had 14 successful dribbles, whipped in 10 crosses and taken 12 shots, so he’s having a bright start to the campaign.

Playing Liverpool at Anfield is a tough task but getting a result will be difficult without Bruno and ASM – Newcastle’s chief creator and most-threatening forward.

Howe isn’t blessed with a lot of options in his absence either, as Callum Wilson and new-boy Alexander Isak (paperwork pending) are doubts while Matt Ritchie, Ryan Fraser and Jacob Murphy don’t have a goal or assist to their name this season, so Newcastle’s attack will be blunted.

In other news, when could Bruno Guimaraes return?

matchday.
