It would be safe to say that there is a lot of talk around Sandro Tonali at the moment. The Italian midfielder seems open to the prospect of a Newcastle United exit. On the other hand, clubs like Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City are keeping an eye on him.
As things stand, Tottenham seem the farthest along when it comes to their interest in signing Tonali. They have already seen a £80 million bid rejected.
Newcastle United are believed to be looking at a figure in the region of £100 million. It remains to be seen if Tottenham would be willing to meet that demand.
It is also possible that Tottenham could try to sweeten the deal by including a player as part of it. Perhaps someone the Magpies could do with, owing to their struggles up top last season.
Tottenham tipped to offer striker to Newcastle United to unlock Tonali deal
Newcastle United have had their issues with options up top. Alexander Isak left for Liverpool last summer and was replaced by Nick Woltemade.
Woltemade looked pretty good early on but lost his form a few months later. By the end of the campaign, he was not even playing as a striker a lot of the time. Overall, he managed just 11 goals in 51 games. Nowhere near good enough.
On top of that, Anthony Gordon has left Newcastle United to join Barcelona. That further weakens Eddie Howe’s options going forward.
So, Newcastle United could do with a striker. And a report from the Mirror has suggested that Tottenham could potentially offer them Richarlison as part of a deal to sign Tonali.
Would Richarlison be a good addition?
Richarlison has proven himself in English football, having had long spells at both Everton and Tottenham. That being said, he has faced plenty of struggles since joining the London club.
Richarlison has managed only 32 goals in 133 games for Tottenham. That is not the goalscoring rate of an elite striker by any stretch of the imagination.
Also, in recent years, we have increasingly seen that clubs are reluctant to accept other players as part of a deal. There is no reason to believe that Newcastle United would want to break that trend.
If Tonali does leave Newcastle, one would imagine that the Magpies would already have alternative options picked out. And they would want to reinvest the money trying to sign them, rather than lowering the potential fee by allowing Tottenham to include Richarlison in the deal.
