Newcastle United make Manchester City player their ‘primary target’

All the talk in recent days surrounding Newcastle United has been about players potentially leaving the club. Sandro Tonali has been on the receiving end of a transfer bid from Tottenham Hotspur. Arsenal also want him, and he seems to prefer that switch if reports are accurate. And he is also on the radar of Manchester City.

The Citizens have set their sights on Tonali despite already trying to bring in Elliot Anderson. On the other hand, it looks like Newcastle United have one of Manchester City’s players on their radar as well.

Newcastle United are coming off an underwhelming campaign. And there is a recognition that they will need to strengthen in several positions across the pitch.

That includes between the posts. Nick Pope was largely their number one last season as well. And at 34 years of age, the Magpies will need to find a replacement for him sooner or later. Could a Manchester City player be the answer?

Newcastle United eager to sign Manchester City goalie this summer

According to a report from The Athletic, goalkeeper-wise, Manchester City’s James Trafford remains the primary target for Newcastle United. But the England international wants to hold off on deciding his future until he returns from the World Cup.

Trafford was expected to be the number one goalkeeper for Manchester City when he signed last summer. But things did not go according to his plans.

Soon afterwards, Gianluigi Donnarumma became available. Most teams would not have made a move after spending significantly on one goalkeeper already.

Manchester City are not like most teams. They did not hesitate and signed Donnarumma. That meant that Trafford was the second choice all season. But he is far too good for that spot. So, the expectation is for him to leave this summer.

Would Trafford be the right signing for the Magpies?

Trafford has been linked with a long list of clubs this summer. And it is not hard to imagine why that might be the case. He is an elite talent who is available.

If Newcastle United were able to sign him, it would have to be considered a major coup. And it would sort out their goalkeeping situation for years to come.

Trafford is still just 23 years of age. So, it would be a signing for the next decade. Newcastle United fans should be hoping that they are able to pull it off.

That being said, there is expected to be high-profile interest in Trafford. Chelsea, another club with goalkeeping issues, have been linked with him as well, although the presence of Mike Penders there makes things tougher for the Blues.
