It’s been more than 16 years since Newcastle United lost to Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final. The Magpies suffered a 4-1 defeat at the Millennium Stadium and Man Utd sealed a place in the final against Arsenal, but they ended up losing to the Gunners.

Man Utd raced to a 3-0 lead over Newcastle within an hour, courtesy of goals from Ruud Van Nistelrooy (2) and Paul Scholes. The Toon Army pulled a goal back through Shola Ameobi, but Cristiano Ronaldo killed any chance of a comeback with a fourth goal midway through the second half.

Newcastle have featured in 17 FA Cup semi-finals in their history and have made the final on 13 occasions, winning the competition six times. The last time the Magpies progressed to the final two was all the way back in 1999, however, so they’ve been waiting more than 20 years to lift the trophy.

Sadly, United haven’t come close in recent years. They’ve managed only one quarter-final appearance since 2005 and haven’t won the competition since 1955.
