Newcastle rejected the chance to sign Senegalese defender Papy Djilobodji before the 26-year-old moved to Chelsea.
According to the Chronicle, Nantes offered Djilobodji to a number of Premier League clubs for a cut-price of £4million – as the player entered the final year of his contract. Newcastle and their bitter rivals Sunderland were among those offered the chance to sign Papy, but they both rejected.
Despite the lack of interest from the North-East duo, Djilbodji still earned a Premier League move after Jose Mourinho admitted defeat in the pursuit of Everton’s John Stones.
It is believed Steve McClaren was reluctant to sign another defender to rival new recruit Chancel Mbemba for a first-team spot, having failed to offload Mike Williamson during the summer window. There is still time for The Magpies to offload the 32-year-old with the emergency loan window open for Championship clubs, but, as it stands, there are no offers on the table for Iron Mike.
